Suggestions requested

The BOD needs to come up with some ways to spend club moneys in ways that would benefit club members. The BOD needs to include as many members as possible. I want the BOD to start this effort in a big way during the September meeting at Matt's place.

Do club members have any suggestions? Suggest any worthwhile idea. Please suggest ideas that will work and that you will support and feel others will also support.

The one thing that is mentioned over and over again is "What do my dues do? Shouldn't the club spend some of the money to benefit members?

I felt that it was the one area of improvement where I might have been able to contribute as a President. No so, so far.

Please make some suggestions, if you feel they will be helpful.

Eddie

Thanks for pulling that thread Matt... That was one of the better discussions we've had on the topic...

I think a club set of suction cup glass holders would be ideal since we all usually help each other move tanks when necessary... lol ;)

Hmmm. Actually, a set of moving gear like a pair of dollys, some padding, and perhaps those teflon-backed straps would be a good buy for the club to assist with moves.

I say Par Meter :) . Everyone in the club could use it and it isn't something I would pay that kind of money for. It has been mentioned before.........

I agree that the thread Matt posted is one of our better discussions on the subject.
I also think a PAR meter would be a good use of club funds. How much do we currently have in the club treasury?
Our club is relatively small and most of the things COMAS does are probably out of our reach for now but I thought this write up gave a good account of some of the things a club can do:
http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/cs/index.php

I think that these two are things we could definately get started on. The latter is what Randy suggested.

The Library

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

COMAS has a large library of books and DVDs that have been both donated and bought using member dues. The contents of the library are determined by the members of COMAS who are encouraged to contact the club President or the club Librarian with suggestions. On average the club budgets $500 per year to new books and other multimedia. The library is available to all of the current members and the club librarian oversees the loan and return of the books. Books are requested via email or private messages and are handed out/collected at each meeting. Due to demand we have several copies of many books. Some of the more expensive books are kept as reference only and are brought to meetings, but are not available for loan. The club also owns the last several years’ seminar series of the IMAC conferences. Currently there is over $2,000 worth of saltwater texts and resources.

The Equipment Program

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

COMAS members have the option of borrowing various items of equipment owned by the club. These items have been selected as materials which are useful but not necessarily essential for a hobbyist to own. For example the club owns multiple sets of moving equipment to allow a member to move a tank. These include six pairs of vacuum glass clamps, several furniture dollies and a 150 gallon stock trough. These are constantly being used by our members and have been invaluable in many tank moves. In addition the club owns several fish fraps, a light meter and other items such as highly accurate refractometers and a spectrometer. All of these items are required only once in a while by any member, but are constantly in use by the club as a whole.

I say club kegerator = )
Seconded.

I also think moving supplies is a good idea.

I've thrown this out there about 800 million times BUT...bumper stickers is a great way to advertise and might drum up some more support. They aren't that expensive either. The only problem is that people start to complain about sticking something on their car and some of them want *window clings*, but most people didn't seem to mind actually having a bumper sticker.

I think the fish trap is a good idea.......I could be the first to try it out with the chromis :)

Mel: Do you know if window clings are that much more than bumper stickers? Just curious......I think it is a cool idea.

Randy's estimate is correct - we have approx. $2000.

I agree on the PAR meter. Also, how about one of those good phosphate meters? I could put that to use today!

Last suggestion - club pays shipping for some bulk supplies, i.e. GFO, carbon, Randy's 2 Part ingredients - a then club members can buy portions from the order.

PAR meter is a definite.

I like the idea of bulk orders, too. We did that with carbon at one time, didn't we?

That was my first question when I found ETRC's website the other day. :eek2: My first thought was website hosting and domain registration, but that's like $30 a year total. I figured it had to be for something else.

I'm not even officially a member yet, but I'll toss in my $.02 before I toss in my $24. :p

I think equipment is one of the best ways to use this sort of money:
+1 on PAR meter.
+1 on Phosphate meter.
I'll add a good H.O.T. UV Filter (Filter, Powerhead, Plumbing) to the list. These are useful for Reef and Freshwater alike, but they are pretty spendy and never really needed for more than a few days at a time to clear greenwater and/or fish parasites making it a good group item.

Fronting funds for group buys of bulk dry goods like salt, carbon, etc. and covering the shipping seems like a great idea as well. Anyone else for throwing in a 4L can or 20L barrel of Seachem's Purigen? That stuff is magical!

A library is a good idea too, just be sure to cross reference UT's Library (one of the country's better libraries) before buying anything, IMHO, so as not to 'double book.'

I also like the PAR meter.
Dave, i have one of the phospate meters, if you need to borrow it we can get togather. I also have a diatom filter if anyone needs to clear/polish their water.

Can anyone use the UT library?

We've discussed a "club" library for a long time.

I had a bunch of books and I think I gave them all to Art. Collectively, I'd say we have most reef-related books out there. Easiest thing to do is just ask on the forum if anyone has it and will let you borrow it. I'd say that you need to have been around for a while ("member in good standing") before someone will loan you a book, ya know?

Window clings are RIDICULOUSLY expensive...maybe even more than 10x the cost. Plus some of them leave dye all over your window if you take the cling off anyways. I guess as long as you leave the Klingon, it shouldn't be a problem though.

Sorry...didn't understand exactly what you meant. Do you mean "hey, can anyone who walks off the street use the UT library?" or "do any of our club members have library access and can look something up for me?"
