Suggestions/tips for my Sohal Tang

I just purchased the most gorgeous Sohal Tang and I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on them. I've been 'stalking' this particular species and I think he should be fairly easy to accomidate. I plan on feeding him nori (rubber-banded to a rock) as well as a spirulina flake food. Any other thoughts or suggestions? Oh and yes he's in a nearly empty 180 gallon tank with plenty of room to swim and grow (I don't want to get yelled at!). He's been well acclimated (two hours using a drip system) and is VERY active. I'm posting because I know its still early but he seems to pick at everything (I have lots of varied growth in my tank) except for the Nori I feed him. He'll probably eat soon but I'd appreciate any suggestions by learned Sohal keepers as to how I might encourage/entice him to eat sooner!

So your saying all Sohals are killers...and how would you know, I have a Sohal in a 240 for 3 years with 2 other tangs no problems. I know someone where I live that has a Sohal in his 210 for 7 years with 2 other tangs and he also has had no problems. So maybe you should say its your opinion and NOT a statement of FACT. Its like saying all muslims are homicidal maniacs that want to kill you for "jihad". My Sohal loves frozen mysis and krill as the main food he eats with nori added to the tank every other day. Sohals grow big quick, I added my Sohal last it just the way it went he was in a 120 with a yellow and a hippo tang for a year then I got him a 240gal 8' tank. He is in there with a purple and sailfin now and he is the boss but he doesn't bother them he is too busy eating and pooping, he looks like a crop-duster of poop. Thank goodness I have a H&S skimmer rated for 500gal on the tank, you might want to get a good skimmer for your tank Sohals eat and eat, he never stops eating.

I have a deltec apf 600 to clean up after his 'crop dust' and I'm not sure about his aggressiveness, I have some EVIL damsels in there and to tell the truth, if he were to beat them up, he'd be doing me a favor! Anyway, how are some of you offering nori? is it on a clip, rock or sprinkled in? Also, I offer it soaked in selcon and Kent zoecon as added supplementation. Is this adequate food for him/her?

I have read a few stories of them killing their tankmates also..I would suggest you have very few tankmates and make sure that whoever goes in with him can take em;)

agree, i would feed him nori on a clip or rock however you prefer everyday. Also if possible feed him a couple times a day to help keep him fat and happy. They become less aggressive when they arent starving. alot like kids. Good luck

one reason why i didnt get a sohal was due to reading that they become very large and aggressive... so i opted for a clown tang instead... which will also become very large and aggressive...

I suggest feeding a wide variety of macroalgae (various types, as well) and maybe allowing some filamentous algae growth (as horrible as that sounds). I would also continue with the spirulina based flake foods.

I feed my Sohal a variety of foods comprised of Formula two, New Life Pellets, Nori (and other seaweed), Mysis Shrimp, Arctic Pods and sometimes Prime reef. He also steals silversides from me when I try to feed my anemone.

I agree about the individual personality. Mine is in a tank with many inhabitants. He is the boss for sure but is not interested in messing with anyone as long as he is getting his fill. If your tank is big enough, you should be fine.

How would I know? Well lets see... I had one in a 225 gallon tank and he killed a deshardini tang, an emperator angel, a flagfin angel, and was working on my foxface before I took him out.

Granted each one has their own personality, BUT they can turn on you overnight. They can be a model citizen for a year then just turn mean and start killing...

Puffers, then why didn't you say that they "might" go postal instead of just get rid of it. If thats was true I would have to say that Scott's fairy wrasses are all killers since mine has killed 2 other wrasses in my tank. But I know better since I have another thats timid and quite passive so you still doesn't mean they will all turn since I have had one for 3years and my friend has had one for 7 years. Maybe next time say its a opinion instead of a fact I like how now you say all fish have different personalities. But you didn't state that on your first post just that "Sohals are killers get rid of him"...next time why don't you say something constructive like Sohals don't like competion in smaller tanks and that you shouldn't get another tang after him...and such.
