Suggetsions for new DSLR

Hey guys, in the market for a DSLR, I prefer Canon but will look at others and don't particularly want to spend more than $600.

It also has to be fully automatic so the wife can use it with ease.

Any suggestions and why.

Thanks

Honestly, if the $600 is a solid budget line, I'd look at the Canon G9. While I prefer a DSLR, lenses are the single most important part of the equation in regard to image quality. The G9 gives you all of the control of the DSLR in a point and shoot package.

Thanks beerguy.

I realize that lenses are a big factor and maybe I didn't make myself clear. What I was looking for was recommendations for a basic setup that will allow add ons (different lenses) later.

I have a Rebel Xt and I am happy with it, and the wife can use it with the auto functions. I think I paid right around $500 for it new at Best Buy, that was with a 4gb cf card and case and eveything. If you go into Best Buy, just search a few places online that are having sales and Best Buy will meet all of the different places prices. The guy helping me even got on the net and looked up a place that he knew was having a sale on the cf card, saved me like $20 on it. Hope that helps....

I second the G9 I use it as my backup camera to my Canon 40D and I really like the G9 takes great pictures and like beerguy said it has a lot of DSLR features.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I decided to go with the S5 IS. There's a thread on here that has some good quality pics on it and I couldn't justify the price of the G9 against the 400D.

The S5 seems to do everything I want for now, might upgrade at a later date to the DSLR.
