Suicidal Nems

Good morning all,

First off, my lighting is 1 x Kessil A350w, 1 x Kessil A350 and 1 x Kessil H150 blue over a 5.5x2x2 system. My water is not perfect as I have a long term NO3 issue that I am working on using NOPOX which is slowly bringing things back under control with everything else in trim....

So, a strange title you might think but bear with me....I'm not talking about the powerhead variety of nem suicide but something different that I think I may have witnessed with my Mag!!

When I first placed him in the tank some 2 months ago I thought about half way up/down the rockwork so he would not be in the direct light straight away and in such a position as to not be in the main flow straight away, with the option to adjust both to suit....

....he seemed to be quite happy where he was so I slowly upped the light and flow to give what I thought should be the optimum conditions for the species - high light and high flow right??

Well, my nem moved almost straight away....he descended further down the rockwork away from the light and flow until he was sat almost in the shade at the bottom of the rockery!!!

I again tried to get some flow into the spot but the nem slowly started to get smaller and not to open up fully - almost like it had given up!?!

Yesterday, fed up with seeing the nem looking so poor, I decided to move it back up into the light and flow and luckily it was attached to a small branch of Tonga rock so there was no requirement to peel him off the rockery....once placed back in the light and flow the nem has opened up again and looks pretty happy up there?

So my question is this....why would my mag have decided to move away from the light and flow when it could have moved higher to a position better suited to the species??

Paul,

That mag is moving because he may be light sensitive due to oncoming infection, or he may just have been unhappy in that location. They tend to like a flatter surface vs on the side of a column or reef. Sometimes they will move around a rock structure only to return to a flatter high spot with plenty of light & flow. You'll notice when your tank is very stable, they will stay put longer. When they get completely happy, they rarely move at all. I've found that most I've kept have really enjoyed very high flow with strong light if completely well.
Just let him Cruz around the tank and learn from him.

Cheers!

Jared,

Appreciate that mate....since moving him up high he really seems settled and got himself onto the back glass just off centre and in a really nice spot amongst the xenia on the back glass - I hope that he settles there for good but am ready in case he gets another bout of the wanderlust ;)

Thanks again for taking the time to respond

No problem. If they can touch the glass, they will get on it. Most seem to really like it due to the smooth flat surface I believe.

As far as suicidal Magnifica, I don't know anything about that.

Few close calls there!!

The powerhead suicide attempts seem quite common unfortunately, but mine seemed to have chosen to move to a position where he would have diminished:uhoh2:

odd....
