I just set up a 40 breeder for my new sump. I have a new skimmer that needed the real-estate.
I made a bubble trap in the corner and then a triple baffle in the middle of the tank so it's two chambers. Single drain goes to skimmer section through the bubble-trap(LR rubble inside trap to break up bubbles from drain) and then the water flows through the triple-baffle to the return on the other side.
I used to have a triple chamber sump with a refugium on one side, skimmer in the other and return in the middle with a drain to each side...but it was a 55 and too thin for my new skimmer.
The new skimmer is so beefy for my tank atm that a fuge can't really support much in the way of chaeto or other macro algae anyway. Another plus is 100% of the water is going in the skimmer section now instead of 50-60% in the last sump.
Seems to be working very well so far. No micro bubbles even though it's a new skimmer with some new drain plumbing. Very quiet.
Here are a couple pics. The tripe-baffle is working very well and the auto top-off keeps the level perfect.
The bubble chamber is behind the skimmer and is just two pieces of glass 9" x "4" siliconed in to the back corner making a box that goes up from about an inch from the bottom to a couple inches above the sump surface. The drain uses a reverse durso to quiet it as it drains into the bubble-chamber. The water can flow out the bottom but most of the bubbles get stuck in the rubble and go to the top to dissapate without ever entering the sump volume.
Working great for me so far. I'm very pleased. No microbubbles whatsoever.
