Sump equipment help

Ok so I picked up my sump today from ND. There was a problem with the tank and I'm getting it next week. This is the rough layout but without the ATO section (got my own tub)

The first section I plan on fitting socks and my skimmer, the second a refuge with cheeto or the like. Obviously the last section will be the return pump but there will also be some spare room there.

I also have Vecton 600 UV steriliser and a DnD phosphate reactor with pump. Now I want to add these into the system, but wanted advice as to how. I know some spur off the return line and therefore use the return pump as the power into these devices, and I will probably have to with the UV steriliser, but how can I loop these into my system, in what order, to make it look good and be effective at what it does?

Likewise, regardless of where the inputs come from, where do I have the returns from these two devices? I mean what chamber? Back to the beginning?

All advice welcome asap as I need to tell them what piping in need for all this before Monday. Thanks.

What skimmer are you planning on using? It makes sense to match the flow through the sump to the skimmers flow rate and that will determine where the output goes most likely.

I think what I'll do is T off the return and feed that into the UV and Reactor then have it coming back to the return section.

How can I plumb to into one though? Will a T piece work or would it cause confusion in the cross section?

IMO, if you have room, I'd run the UV out of band on a smaller, separate pump. It can dump right back into the sump and you keep it separate from the rest of your plumbing. Though, you can do it either way. I just like keeping any auxiliary reactors, sterilizers, etc. off the return plumbing for simplicity.

Ts will work but you'll want to use a ball / gate valve to fine tune the flow to each bit of equipment

I did this quickly yesterday for someone asking about proper manifold setup.. The Order and placement of each item is not so important just fit them where you have room inside your stand or area you choose..


To use your return pump to run reactors uv and so on you will need to create something like this...



Mine is very similar with the exception i have two Elbows and a second Return line that actually goes up over and into washing machine drain with a ball valve to do water changes..

Hmmmm. Thanks for your input. I suppose you have to have the ball valve in the top right to create the back pressure to force the water into the spur right?

I'm thinking now I may just have a second pump (I have a few spare) doing it's own separate loop to the uv and reator.

And then of course if it is on the main return line, any change with the settings for the auxiliary equipment will effect the return rate I'm guessing.

I figured continuing the feed round and back on itself will allow any unwanted flow (from the taps being turns down to whatever's needed) to continue and meet back up with the treated water and carry it back to the sump. Probably into my refuge section to give it some flow.

For this to have any chance of working, you would need to have a ball valve on the main line after the reactor feed but before the reactor output tees back in. Still, I wouldn't go this route. I have not had luck teeing small lines back into a main line.

Thanks for you reply. Does it make any difference that this isn't the return line to the DP, it's just going back into the sump? I was hoping that the returns from the UV and reactor would go up and meet the flow of the spare water not gone into them and it would join the flow back to the sump. ?

I see what you mean with the extra ball valve, it would be needed to force water into the two spurs wouldn't it.

You cant feed the discharge lines back into the Return lines. they need to be fed into a open chamber into the sump .The end of your Loop will also need a ball valve on it to force water thru the reactors as they will have some back pressure...

Thanks mate. I've actually changed it. I've got rid of the gate valves, my pump running it is only 1000l p/h. The Reactor only needs a fraction of that and the V2 can take 1900l so I'm going to replace the gate valve to the reactor with a smaller turning valve thing that came with it and then the residuary will carry on to the v2. Saves about £30 and achieves the same. Well... in theory.
