Sump filter tray idea. Your thoughts...

I made a filter tray out of leftover plexiglass and drilled holes in it so I can use replaceable filter pads I can get from work in the tray. My main tank drain will empty into the tray and it sits about an inch above the waterline for that skimmer compartment. The main reason I went with this idea is because I really don't feel like spending money on filter socks and plus, I can get filter floss from work. What do you think?

I think both filter socks and filter pads are something else that I will regularly forget to do on my tank. Since I already forget to regularly empty the skimmer cup, fill the ATO tank, and do water changes, I would rather keep things I have to futz with constantly out of my system. To each their own.

Exactly. That's why I don't use those techniques. Not that they are bad techniques, just that I won't use them correctly which means they go bad due to my laziness.

Using it as a means of mechanical export it will work just fine. But just like filter socks and like previously mentioned if not cleaned or replaced regularly they will clog up and just concentrate the material they collect to break down and run over the side and back into your water column.

Get outa my head!
