Sump filtration

Hi there new to the hobby. Quick question instead of on the filter sock side of my sump can I make a trickle filter and then have my protein skimmer in the middle chamber take care of the rest or is this just madness

Yes, assuming you have a submersible protein skimmer and the water can stay at a constant level in the chamber. Many reefkeepers do it this way. The skimmer and sock are very different in the proportion of what they can "catch," as the skimmer is catching micro particles that can attach to tiny air bubble. Welcome to the site!

I'd ditch the trickle filter and just rely on the live rock in the DT as your primary biological filter. The skimmer would just be the icing on the cake so to say. Keep it simple. GL.
