so..I'm in the process of turning my 75 into a full on reef. I have a 46 with in-sump fuge and I am really wanting to use an external fuge on the 75 build for nutrient export(cheato and mangrove tree). I'm thinking of a 20 x 20 cube(25 gallons). My question is..how big of sump should I use? Can I use a 20 long and not overflow it? or use a 29 just to be safe? Is there a rule of thumb or calculation to make this easier?

My preference would be to go as big as you can fit into the available space. Don't forget that your sump needs to hold all of the drain back water in the event of a power failure. So, even though your sump might be 30G, you might be only able to have 20G in it on an on-going basis. The other 10G would be reserved for drainage.

With my 75G DT, I have a traditional 35G 3-section sump that has an integral 10G lit fuge. I only have ~25G of total water in the sump. I also have a 20G cryptic Fuge that is fed by the output of my external skimmer. It drains into the return section of my sump.

If I had the space, I'd have 200G to 300G in sump/fuge.

One more thing, to the best of my knowledge, Mangroves provide very little in the way of nutrient export. An ATS or larger macro algae section would give you more nutrient export capability.

thanks for the info. I know exactly what youre saying. I just need to figure out how much water will back flow from the 75 and 25. Mangroves do little nutrient export, but they will be more for looks. Counting on other macros to do most exporting. I just like the Julian sprung mangrove look.
