Sump for a 55

Any chance anyone has a sump that will fit under a 55? Only a 10 gallon aquarium will fit in the 10 or 11 inches of depth and I want more volume than that. I am planning on building one from scratch with acryllic, but figured I would ask first.

you can order pre cut and add baffles or holes drilled to your specs at www.glasscages.com from acrylic, or two types of glass. good luck with the build, i find glass much easier to work with IMO. have agreat afternoon!!!...

I took a 10 gallon tank from walmart (like 8 bucks) and then siliconed some baffles in it for cheap for my 55

Thanks for the reply. Is 10 gallons enough for a refugium and sump?? I was thinking it was too small. I have a ten laying around.

Personally I would make the sump as big as you can. You'll appreciate it later. Especially if you're going to try and run an in sump skimmer.

Hi Matt, Yes, as you know I am planning on getting an Octopus fairly soon. But first I need the sump. ;0) I did buy the Oceanrunner pump you reccomended from F&S. actually, I am excited to see it when I get home. But now I have got to get this sump figured out so I can use it.

I keep going back and forth on using a 10 gallon.

Compjtc, do you have a skimmer in there? How is it working for you?

go to walmart, hd, lowes, etc. and check out rubbermaid containers. Just bring your measurements with you so you know how big it can be. There are lots of people using those as sumps.

Yes, but I want a refugium in there as well. That seems sort of difficult in a non-square tank. I did have one guy on here tell me he does it without baffles in a tote.

I think I am down to two 10 gallon aquariums and putting a "U" between them.

I am still trying to figure out how to do a DIY overflow without bending acrylic. I have ideas here as well but haven't tried them yet..

yeah, 10 is too small to have a usefl sump and refugium. On my 55 I have a 30 gallon refugium and just use the 10 as a sump, and by sump I mean place to hold the skimmer return pump, and heater, it's a pretty cramped area.

I use a rubbermaid with no baffles and grow chaeto in there as well. I wouldn't recommend doing it though. Pieces of the chaeto always get stuck to the pumps. Do it right the first time around, you'll regret it later if you don't.

I got lucky!! You won't believe this ....

I finally figured out how I am doing my sump and refugium. Actually my wife and I went to Sea of Miracles in Iowa City yesterday and she decided she had to have a Puffer. I told her I would convert one of our 55 freshwater into another SW but there is no way to put a sump under it. I told her we would have to put one in the basement and pipe it up to both tanks. She wants to do it, so I am busy today getting an old 30 gallon ready to be a sump and piping it up stairs.

Can you believe it??? My wife actually agreed to drilling more holes in the floor!
