Sump Help

Hey guys,

So ive been wanting to put a dsb/refugium in my sump with out having to drain it and silicone in a new bit of glass.

Below is an image of my sump that came with my tank.

Are you sure that picture is correct? It looks like you should have 3 pieces of glass forming a bubble trap before the return. If the picture is the way it is, there is nothing to keep anything in the middle section from flowing to the return section and your display tank. How about creating the bubble trap? Was the center section used perviously for a skimmer?

looks like it should be good, but if you are going to put the refugium in the middle you probably want the wall between that and the heater/return section all the way on the ground, or the sand will get pushed inthe the return section and into your tank. Or even put a second baffle like between the first two sections.

yes this is how my sump looks. The middle section currently has coral chunks + some filter wool. Skimmer wasnt in the middle section always been plumbed into the first. I dont have any issues with bubbles going up into my display.

With DSB in the refugium, I think you are going to be very hard on the impeller of your return pump. I had something similar, even had a piece of plexi above the sandbed before the return. My pumps lasted for about a year before I had impeller problems and had to replace the pumps. Being the idiot that I am, it took me a while to figure out that sand was the problem. The sand bed was 2 inches and the plexi 3 inches. I was moving about 700 gph over the sand.

My concern is there is nothing stopping the flow of sand to the return pump.

Thats what im asking if there is away of stopping the stand from getting to the pump with out having to drain my sump and siliconing in a new peace of glass.

I cant think of one, unless you switched the overflow section to the return section and visa versa.
