Do you need to light your sump if you don't have macro algea

If you do not have macro...than no. But I would highly recommend Macro and a light . The difference it can make is outstanding.

oh, and the lighting neccessary to grow most macro can be obtained for less than $25 at any home depot.

I use a 6500 K compact floresent screwed into a a aluminium reflector clamp light. Plus there is inteesting stuff that lives in sumps fun to look at.

One of these screwed into a simple clamp light fixture (about $5-10 at home depot or lowes)

And for macro, I'd recommend Cheatomorphia. Some retailers will get this in, online and local, but you could probably find some from a fellow reefer. Especially since the common practice is to harvest some out of the tank occasionally.
