Sump on my 75

Hey Guys

Just getting back into it after 8 years I bought a used 75 and it came with the sump posted below. I currently do not have the extra cash for a skimmer at the moment but will in a few months. I think this sump seems to be a little small for the tank can you guys tell me what your opinions are about this sump and what you would change. Water is pretty good ph is at like 7.8 nitrates are at like 5 - 10 ppm rest is all at 0 ppm

Here is a little better pic you can see the carbon bag under the bio ball chamber. I have about 90 pounds of live rock in the tank also.

I think the sump is very small for the tank. You can get. 20 gallon long at petco and make a sump with the dimensions that you want.

Thats what I was thinking any ideas on design should I use a sock and live rock or bioballs or something else?

Ok update just bought a 20 gal long to make a fuge / sump and ideas and design would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much guys for sharing your knowledge.

Use filter sock and change it often if you don't have a skimmer.

Having or not having a skimmer makes a big difference in how I'd design the sump. Since you say you will have a budget for a skimmer, I assume you intend to go that direction? So have you picked out the skimmer you want? Then how big it is will help decide how big one section of the sump needs to be... especially if you run a filter sock (or 2).

Having a refugium in a 20L aquarium after you have taken up room for a skimmer section and the evaporation/return pump/with room for back flow after pump failure section, may be rather small? IMHO a refugium helps. But maybe having room for 1 or 2 reactors for carbon, GFO or phosphate removal make more sense? And that statement comes from a guy who doesn't run anything in a reactor on either of my 2 systems. But then I have big refugiums with lots of macro algae and lots of live rock.

My sump is roughly 25 to 30% the size of my DT and I use 3 filter socks. The return from my DT is split in 2 so I can use 2 filter socks (less changing of socks) and one more for the return from my display refugium. The skimmer picks up water after the filter socks (I'd rather skim straight from the tank but I didn't want to drill a hole in a new tank under warranty). That water flows over to the evaporation chamber where the return pump is. I do have a reactor plumbed into the system (the return pump section), but I almost never put anything in it, just allow water to flow through it to keep it ready for emergencies.

If I was going to go skimmerless for long periods of time (maybe always) I'd do at least 2 filter socks, and some live rock with a macro algae like Chaeto, a reactor or 2 and then the return pump in a separate section.

I am thinking about going with the Reef Octopus Classic 110INT. I do have a lot of live rock in the DT b ut was going to put some in the sump/fuge also. I was thinking 2 socks on the in from the DT then skimmer then fuge then return and on the baffle going to the return was going to make a ledge for media bags.... what do you think?

Ok update I decided on a Reef Octopus 150 SSS I rather have more then not enough skimming power ;-) I do have a question about a media tray should I have the media tray before or after the fuge? I was also wondering what the purpose of a sponge is in some designs I have seen do I need one? and if so before or after the fuge also. Thanks for the help guys
