Sump or Wet/Dry?

Just wondering, I've seen this on ebay/marinedepot for about $250 average, (Eheim Professionel Wet/Dry Canister Filters (2227, 2229) and was wondering how its setup, as I've seen no one have this anywhere or pictures of it setup, does it have its own pump and you just set it outside the tank or what?

Mainly I was wondering whether to get that and set it up however (please someone tell me how to) or buy a 10g, and make it into a sump somehow for my 29g, or should I just buy the Eheim Professionel Wet/Dry Canister Filters (2227, 2229) I really am not sure but I need some sort of good filtration... I was going to buy a remora but I think one of these would be better,

it is a canister filter that exposes the biological media to air so it gets the benefits of a wet dry filter. Eheim stuff works great, but is usually pretty expensive. I would recommend going with a 15 gallon or 20 L gallon and turn that into a sump, or just buy a sump. Reason being is you can do more with a sump as far as what media you want and how much, you can top off your water in the sump causing less stress to the tank's inhabitants, and you can dose for things in the sump so big concentrations of calcium or whatever aren't stressing out anything in the tank.

right I know what it is but how does it get SETUP do you just set it outside your tank and run air lines into your tank or what?

You put it in the stand or wherever outside the tank and then put the two pipes in the tank and plug it in

There are three hoses from the Eheim 2227/2229. One runs over the back of the tank into a vertical solid pipe that extends to the bottom of your tank and is the water intake. Another runs over the back of the tank and under the water, then bends back horizontal into a spray bar for the water return. The third (smaller) just goes over the back of the tank and is an air input, so the end of it has to be higher than your water level.

All of the pieces that go over the top of the tank are made of solid plastic. All three hoses attach to a connector on top of the pump housing, so it takes about 1 second to disconnect them, with only a few drops of water spilled.

I think these units are great, and I haven't found them to be "nitrate factories" like normal wet/dry filters are.

Thanks "lancer" for the input. I think I'm going this route instead of building a hole sump, since my tank isn't drilled and an over the back over flow, siphon doesn't sound safe in my opinion so I'll be trying this route since its only a 29, and keeping up on my water changes. Anyways thank you all.

I used one for a year and I liked it. Keep the canister clean cause it will build up some nasty stuff in the bottom.

Do you have any update on your system I am setting up a 34g cube and this sounds like it could be very beneficial. The tank already has a built in skimmer but I cannot keep a lot of rock in the tank so maybe this will off set. Thanks
