sump/pump/return question

I am new to this hobby wich i am learning is more of a life style. I have a 90 gallon with a overflow that i am setting up. i was told this setup should have a flow of 600 gph. my friend had a new mag drive 7 that he was not using so i got that from him for my return. I have the return going up 2 feet where there is a barbed fitting and it goes back to 3/4" pvc that splits and goes to both corners of the tank. each return has a ball valve so i can chang the flow from side to side. my problem is that the drain line to my sump is loud as it cant keep up with the pump. even though its a five foot hight for the return water to get back to the pump water back in the tank and if im looking at the box right that hight should reduce the flow to 480 gph??? if i close the ball valve on the return about half way it keeps up and makes almost no noise. this restructs the pump and makes it work harder then it needs to. what are your thoughts? any help would be awesome!
