Sump Question

Alright guys I am looking for a good sump/refug. Do any of you have experience building these with glass or acrylic or do you know of anyone that does?

I am looking for someone that has experience doing this though.

I am sort of considering drawing up my design and sending it to www.glasscages.com for a quote. I would like to just do it myself, but I have no experience working with acrylic (plus I don't have the tools to cut it).

Maybe jim at sea dwellers on dupont might be able to help, or at least point you in teh right direction.

Depends on what you want. I have built a few now, but I tend to use a glass tank, and just cut the acrylic down to make my own dividers. I have a makeshift router table that I use to make my cuts in the acrylic.
I could help you make one like this, just need to have a design and the required acrylic.
Also, I am in Warsaw, not Fort Wayne.

Sounds great Taz. I am currently trying to get the exact dimensions of the inside of the stand from the individual that is building it. Once I have those I will start looking for a glass tank to fit that space.

The layout that I am probably going to go with is as follows from left to right:

Area for Protein Skimmer ----> Return Arena <----- Refug

The area from the Protein Skimmer to the return should have a buddle trap and the area from the Refug to the return area should be an overflow like design with teeth.

Gondore, do go check out melev's site (first reply), there's a ton of information about how to, why, etc. I'd bet that most if not all of your questions will be answered there.

Gondore, I believe you can find a lot of info. on GARF Its either .com or .org can't remember. They have info for everything. Good luck I am not from the Fortwayne area (Bremen)but I go to this forum alot and have spoke to tazman about frags, which I would still like to get by the way. moneys tight right now though. So I need to wait. Does anyone no where I could get a 90 gal or bigger glass tank for resonable price? Also I have a few kenya frags if anyone is interested. Have a good day.

If you are looking for a tank, check out ebay or papers like the peddlers post. you can find some killer deals in there some time as well.

It is garf.org

Found one !!!!!

Found one !!!!!

Yeah, I found one in fortwayne a 120 for 120. with stand overflow and all. I have never hooked up a overflow so I may be asking lots of questions. I have a overflow box or whartever you call it that hangs on the backand goes to the sump with built in skimmer, I bought it all new so hooking it up was easy I just followed the directions. I don't know if I will be able to use it or not. I will figure something out. Thanks

Depending on the size tank, the 30 or 40 breeders make nice sumps. Same size tanks, accept the 30 breeder is about 13" tall compared to 17". These sized take into account the height of the plastic trim.

Alright...here is the layout I am thinking of:

What size tank are you planning on running this under?
Looks like the size of this sump design is a standard 30 gallon. If you can come up with the acrylic, I can help you cut it out some weekend if you want to head out this way.

tazman71 - What do you think it would cost to for the tank (38 gallon is what I believe it is) and the acrylic? Have you did the teeth in the acrylic before for the overflow? Where is a good place to purchase acrylic and do they sell colored pieces?

Thanks for your help so far!

Actually, I ended up with a few pieces from work that I used on the earlier ones I did. My latest sump, I picked some up from a plastics place while I was in Tenessee. I recomend using .25 inches. I used 3/16, and I have some bowing with the amount of flow going through.
Price wasn't much though. If you don't mind the black acrylic throughout, I would pick up a tank and have Firework have them cut to size if it isn't too hard.
I have done the teeth before, but it was an amateur job at best. I was in a hurry to finish. I am sure I can do a better job next time around.

Have any of you ever herd of Meyer Plastics in Ft.Wayne they deal in acrylic full sheets and scrap piceses too. They also have all the glues drill bits saw blades heat strips just about anything you will need.
There phone number is(260)482-4595.
give them a call

Gondore- Something to think about is the thinner the acrylic, the more likely it will crack when working on it. Lowes has acrylic 2 x 4 sheets( I think 3/8 thick). Its what I made my 25g cube from.
Also check out Meyer Plastics as Smithppa said. I know thats where the owner of Petwarehouse goes for stuff.
