i went to a LFS and picked up a 20g long to make into a Refugium for my 75g, and i have a 10g laying around so i thought i would put it to use also, turns out my stand is 2 small to fit the tanks lol :-P cant even fit one of them, so i figured it would give me a good reason to build one or find a nice one on CL but anyways, here is what i had in mind for the build

im looking for suggestions, ideas, and such to make it better as this is my first time attempting to make one. i was gonna use bio balls but was told from a few reefers they raise nitrates or was it nitrites ither way i was told they wernt good (ideas?) so just looking for suggestions and stuff, both good and bad :-)

Your design looks good. Are you planning on inverts or a small fish in the fuge part? Your baffle design looks good, but be sure to keep them spread apart to allow you variable flow options and the baffles that are facing inside the fuge area will require some type of screen (egg crate type of material) to prevent your critters from going through the baffles. I know that much from experience. Trying to retrofit something after the fuge is operational is troublesome! From your diagram; are you going to drill the sump/fuge and then hard pipe them together? That would be a nice and clean looking job but be sure to keep cleaning the plumbing in mind. Looks good, Have fun!

i was thinking of only keeping plants and macros in the fuge. yes i planned to drill the sump/fuge and use hard pipe. good point on keeping cleaning in mind lol

Instead of running the two in series, consider doing in parallel with a valve that can control how much goes into each. That way, you can run a smaller amount of (read: lower flow speed) through the refugium (from the root "refuge"). You might also want to make the smaller tank the refugium, and put the LR and skimmer via the large one.
