Sump replacement went rather easy

To give you all the short story and pictorial of my recent sump and protein skimmer replacement last Friday, the entire procedure only took 5 hours with the help of my son.

I replaced my 20 year old Aqua Clear Aquatics sump and AquaC EV-180 protein skimmer with the Trigger Systems Emerald 34" sump and the Nyos Quatium 160 skimmer. Let me tell you all, both the new sump and skimmer are top of the line and the quality of the Trigger Systems sump and Nyos Quatium skimmer are built like a tank and the craftsmanship is stealer.

Since I would usually replace larger pieces of equipment from the backside on the fish tank stand, this time around, I replaced the sump and protein skimmer from the frontside, which required a little engineering on my part and careful planning. On a side note, I did drain 3/4's of the tank water and temporarily stored the water in the good old Rubbermaid 44 gallon Brute garbage containers. I also placed some of corals and live rock in my emergency backup 50 gallon tank that I have running in the garage.

I built a temporary support structure that would help carry the load bearing weight of the center of the fish tank stand, while I took off one the front panels that obviously lended to the structural integrity to the fish tank and stand as well. I also decided to reinforce the bottom area of the stand with 1/2" plywood, since the water volume of my new increased by 15 gallons, plus the fiber wood flooring has seen better days.

In all, the entire procedure took about five hours, which my fish and corals did very well during the remod. The only thing left to do, is to fill the holes on the front right panel and stain.

Since the sump and skimmer are so attractive to look at, my next project is going to built a 80/20 t slot fish tank stand for my 90 gallon reef system.

Attached are the pictures of last Fridays project.

Thanks,
Randy

Nice.

Why didn't you just take off one of the side panels. They don't look load bearing, but there just to "enclose it".

Could have taken one of those off, then slide the new sump in thru there?

The way this stand is built, it was impossible to take off this side panel. It was either take down the entire tank and replace the sump from the back or remove one of the front panels, which wasn't that bad.

The next stand I either build or purchase, will have access from both sides and front.

Thanks,
Randy

Where did you purchase your sump-how much?

I purchased the Trigger Systems sump and Nyos skimmer from Premium Aquatics. When I purchased the sump about three weeks ago, Premium Aquatics had a good sale on the Trigger Systems sumps. The sumps are back to the MSRP pricing right now. Even without a sale, I would have paid full price for the sump.

After a few days of running my new sump, it's amazing how quite the Trigger Systems Emerald 34 really is. The sound that is coming from my new sump, it sounds like a gentle running brook, barely audible, instead of a water fall that my old sump generated.

As for my new Nyos Quatium 160 skimmer, this skimmer is already pulling out excellent skim-mate within only two days. The German engineering on the Nyos Quatium skimmer is beyond remarkable.

Thanks,
Randy

Nice Job. Enjoy the new sump!

Center supports/small doors are a major issue with stands, IMO. Unfortunately people don't realize it until after they have the stand and everything's installed.

I just got done replacing my Marineland factory stand with a custom stand that doesn't have a center support - makes a huge difference!

That thing looks great! I ordered the Emerald 34" a little over a week ago and I cant wait to get it. I asked for a customization of blue acrylic instead of green so its gonna take a bit longer and cost a tad bit more but I think itll be worth it.

You are so right, these older stands with the small access door openings are a major headache for sure.

The next stand I either build or purchase, will not have a center post and I'm leaning towards a 80/20 T Slot frame. The custom T-Slot frames stands that Primo Reef Acylics builds, are gorgeous.

Hello booth2010,

I never thought of asking for a custom color, which blue is my favorite color. Oh well, the lime green color that I have is very pleasant to look at.

The overall design of the Emerald sump series is extremely well thought out. When water is entering into section 1 of the sump, you can barely hear the water flow. Another big plus on this sump, you have the adjustable water height to meet all the latest skimmers that are on the market. For optimal performance for Nyos Quatium skimmer, the specs call for the water height to be at 8.5", which I'm right on target.

Overall, I think the Trigger Systems Emerald 34 is the best sump for your money right now.

Enjoy your new sump,
Randy

The adjustable water height is why I went with the emerald instead of one of the cheaper models. I had built my own sumps in the past and had to do little DIY stands to raise the skimmer, it will be nice to have a baffle to adjust the water height.

Looks great! Premium aquatics is so great to work with. Jeremy and crew have gone above and beyond for me more than once.
