Sump return question

Silly clownfish

So I'm finally setting up my 75g with 20g sump and had ordered the common el cheapo return jet shown here: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/return-jet-1.html

The issue i have with this is it extends too deep into the water so if the power goes out and it siphons, it takes a lot of water out of the tank - about 4" of depth, which is about an inch more than I designed for. Yes, I can drill an anti-siphon hole or 2 and/or find a way to prop it a couple of inches off the tank rim, but both of these seem doomed for a mishap at some point.

What I want to do is bring my 3/4" tubing up from the sump, and clamp it to an inverted U with a 45 degree elbow directed into the tank and just submerged 1/2 to 1 inch. The catch is I would like to use black PVC, and can't seem to find these fittings anywhere, even online, although i have seen photos of people's tanks with this setup. Where did you get your parts?

Or is there a way I can cut down the jet return to shorten the piece on the tank side and cement it back together? If does not look like PVC, so I don't think that cement will work.

Thanks,
Kim

just raise the return jet.. it doesn't need to rest on the top of the tank.
or trim it just above the ball joint, trim a bit off, and use some flexible clear tubing to put it back together or some nice plastic epoxy.

or just buy regular pvc to do your other idea and hit it with a can of black plastic spray paint like krylon fusion.

I wrapped mine with a bunch of black hockey grip-tape. Stuck a little piece of wood inside the taped part. All done it propped it up about 1.5 inches. I would recommend using some better parts so you could go with loc-line, and use some eductors. That's what I will do next time. I think some people have gotten this product to work with loc-line. They just got fancy with a heat gun and jammed it on there..

Thanks. i think I am going to put what I have in the miscellaneous parts pile and go with loc-line. I see now that it is possible to connect that to the vinyl tubing with an adapter and a PVC barb.

Will do. I found plastic straps for holding pipes at Lowes. I will be using screws to attach to the cabinet, and maybe the plastic rim of the tank? I'm not convinced on that yet.

i have an old canister filter that had a plastic bracket to attach a return fitting, but it is for 5/8" tubing so I can't use it here. I have thought of so many uses for a 3-d printer during this setup... I doubt I can convince my husband that now I need one of those

The usual way is just to drill another hole in the glass and use a 1inch bulkhead or similar. This just seems to permanent. My stand is a coffee table and I have no canopy. I might just end up using a big 'ol clamp.
