Sump Size

What size sump would you guys recommend for a 240gal aquarium? I was thinking about picking up a 40gal breeder from Petco. They have their $1/gal sale going on right now.

For a 240, I would recommend 80 gallons. This sticks to the rule of thirds. Which applies in all aspects of life

Granted, a 240 has a ton of volume, so a 40b could suffice if you equip it properly. Get a huge skimmer, provide plenty of rubble or other filtration, and have a huge section dedicated to macro algae.

Not sure on sump size but warning if you are planning on drilling it for any reason the Petco $1 a gallon tanks are all tempered. This is according to two different sales people at two different Petco stores. Just thought I would mention. If not planning on drilling it, it is a good sale but I think bigger for that size tank. I am not the person to answer that though.

You have a big tank so I'll assume you have a big stand with lots of room under it. Go as big as you can deal with both space wise and financially. I have a 180g and 75g hexagon on a single stand and I have a 180g sump/refugium (8'x2'x18"). It makes life so easy. Not tall so lots of room to work. And big enough to do almost anything!

I think it depends on what you are going to do... If you want to have additional rock to increase boil filtration or run a refugium or both then you should look at a larger tank. If you are only going to keep a skimmer the sump then why have all of the extra tank.

You'll always need room for reactors and other equipment, it depends on what you're planning on having.

I have a 180 tank and have my sump built out of a 75 using baffles to separate sections. I'd recommend going as big as you reasonably can.

I plan on doing a FOWLR setup. Do you know where I can get at least a 75gal sump and I'm also seeking advice on a good skimmer. Anyone have any recommendations?

Just the bottom is tempered, right?

On most new tanks yes. Certain older tanks also temper the backglass. But odds are you won't run into that

Where would you guys recommend I look for a good sump?

Find a 75 gallon or 90 gallon on c/l pay $1 a gallon for a used tank that size. Get some glass cut at a actual glass shop, not the stuff from the local hardware as its way to thin.

Figure out what you want to do for your skimmer, fuge(if running one) and your return.

You can make them simple or you can make them crazy with different compartments and such.

Lots of designs on youtube and the diy section.

Good Luck

two points:

If you are doing a FOWLR, the sump may be a bit less important. Fish are more tolerant of water issues than most corals.

I found a big acrylic frag tank (8'x2'x18") and added baffles myself.

I picked up a 40 breeder a few months ago, the last time they had the sale, and I drilled it I also picked up a 10, and drilled it with no problems. So the assertion that "are all tempered" is false, at least in my case.
