sump size

tank watch

In Memoriam
Now that the 640 is constructed, how big of a sump do I need?
The skimmer will be external, the refugium will be a 55 gal long that I have, also closed loop with two pumps and two 8 way ocean motion.
How big is realy necessary?
any sump design ideas are greatly appreciated.
thanks, Matt

While you will hear as big as you can fit (not bad advise), the question you probaly are asking is what is the minimum size I should get.

Since you have a separate fuge, the sump merely needs to hold enough water to service your skimmer, other equipment or monitoring you might be interested in having, and (most important) the volume of water your tank will dump when the power or return pump fails. There are calculators on Reef Central that will help you to calculate this. That is the minimum.

The maximum is as large as you can fit.

I hope that helps.

The bigger the better. You really can't get too big on the support.

i agree

thanks. I have the space under and now behind the tank. the wife is letting me relocate the tank.
I have a lot of guestimating to do on the plumbing then. thanks again

hey Matt, there is a lot of ways you can do this. I have two sumps, 150gal main sump, then also have 180gal water change sump the reason why I did this because I can change any amount of water volume I want, more is always better but why have just enough.
