Sump water level

This is RTaylor;

My predictions were correct. you are creating a syphon. What you need to do is replace the elbow that is on the outside of the tank with a Tee (Durso method) but you will need an overflow box around the inside elbow or else the tank level will sit about midpoint of the elbow. Or you can turn the elbow that is inside the tank 180 degrees so the strainer points up, you will still probably need the Tee.

If no air is constantly allowed to get in the drain line you will start a syphon. (Carlson surge device).

You may still have to dial back the pump, but never valve the drain.

I would try the second option first (tee & turned elbow),but I would eventually plan on making an overflow box for it.

Spud; elbow on bulkhead doesn't really explain much.

Agreed-- I assumed he had it pointed up is all-- looks like he was trying to set drain flow with yhe valve to maintain water level-- can't be done-- I'd turn that elbow up at least for now and open up that valve.

I did and used to have it up 180*, it made no difference, it still overfilled my sump. I am frustrated because I did have it up well at an angle and it still drained too much, but maybe I did somethign wrong. My reason for having it down now is to reduce the noise level in my studio, the sound of a flushing toilet seems to annoy me and my gf pretty bad.

I love the idea of a horizontal overflow, I read it in Calfo's book, but I would love to see a good diagram of one to help me along, then I can build from acrylic and glue it to the inside of tank np.

Thanks so much for all the help, sometimes a pic does say a thousand words.

late night update

late night update

I am up late tinkering, and decided to remove the elbow and although I had to tweak the drain valve it seems to have abaited the equilibirum problem.

However, its not a permanent solution. I need a good plan or drawing for a horizontal overflow box, and durso pipe for it.

I will keep my setup as is, until I have the overflow. hopefully this should help things a stablize a bit.

any more suggestions, feel free I am all ears guys.

Yeah the noise can drive you nuts thats for sure.. Once you get your overflow box built hopefully you will be closer to the solution Definatley don't go for the hang over the back solution. I've had problems with them over time growing algae in the U tube and gradually degrading flow to the point of overflowing the tank.. Not good.

The noise sucks right now, literally!!

It's not ideal by any means, but the tank is balanced, I have the ball valve turned slightly to compensate for the pump, I will not use the valve at once I have my overflow box done.

I am going to have to find an acrylic dealer, wish Home depot sold some, might be easier as I am off today.

On my way out to petstore, need a carbon pad, getting lots of particulates in water column, Turbidy is an issue when you only have 2 150de's I want to make sure all the light reaches the bottom of my tank.

If you want to stop the flushing noise you need to replace the outer elbow with a tee. Put the tee with the open end up, add a short lenght of pipe, to get it above possible water level, then a slip x male threaded coupler. Then take a threaded cap and drill the smallest possible hole in the top of it that you can. Teflon tape the threads and screw it on. You will probably have to adjust the size of the hole to get it just right, so buy 2 caps and drill one till you figure out the correct size, if you go too big then drill the second one size smaller.

You will have to do this anyway when you finish the overflow so you might as well get rid of the noise now.

rtayloe thanks

rtayloe thanks

can you explain further or maybe a small diagram, I am little confused by what you said, sorry. hard to visualize that setup.

This is RTaylor:

Go to www.dursostandpipes.com . Tjis page shows you how to build a Durso. Yours will be a little different though. Where the elbow hooks into the tee in the diagram is where yours is going through the glass.

P.S. How long have you had the carpet? It looks good. I'm taking mine to the LFS for credit tomorrow. I got it about 7 months ago at about 8" D now it is 18"D and taking over my tank. It has also eaten 6 or 7 fish all I have left are the 2 hosting Black Saddleback's and a Sixline thats too smart to get caught.
Good luck with yours.

hey thanks for the advice and the webpage.

yea my carpet ate my brand new hippo tang, and three snails, I try to hold off over feeding him to keep him in a decent size range, this may seem cruel, but I feed him only two pieces of ON formula 1 frozen cubes a day, nothing major, he is over 1 year old.

thanks again man

This is how I set up my 200 gallon tank with T's on the outside to allow air in the drain pipes. Without venting your drains, you will get the flushing sound.

Also you could get something like this...

to help skim the surface of the water. They are really easy to make...and you just drain your tank down a little, siicone the overflow, let it dry, and then add your water back to the tank.

The above looks like aluminum, not a good choice of material (if that is what it is) as it will oxidize rather rapidly. I see the clear bottom but the top sure looks like metal.

Everything you see there is acrylic. Acrylic is a plastic, not a metal. It is also one of the most commonly used materials in building aquariums, protein skimmers, sumps, etc. Fairly easy to work with and will not oxidize.

so have you fix the problem?

i have the same setup as you except i have it the 90 degree elbow pivot at 45 degree angel, then i'd drilled a hole @ the back of the 90 degree elbow and put a clear tubing into a plastic jar it muffles the sound.

but i will be adding a overbox soon.
