Sump Weed

So I have a couple of patches of this "Fern-like" algae (?) growing in my sump. I'm just curious as to what it is, and if I need to remove it or leave it be?

ThanX for any input!

Ugh. Thank you Adrienne.

It's odd that it's in my sump and not in my DT...not that I'm complaining. It's attached to the glass baffles, and the pods and brittle stars love hanging out in it.

I'm going to try the 'lights out and raise Magnesium levels approach'. There's only an Emerald Crab down in there, so there's really no need to be lighting it anyway.

What stinks is that it's been growing down there for a while now, and I just let it grow thinking "Better in the sump than the DT". :headwally:

truthfully, that crap is so nasty I would just pull the sump offline, empty it, bleach it, rinse it and put it back.

I wouldn't play pattycake with it. Nuke it while its contained.

Well now you guys are scaring the bejeezus out of me.

I guess I will implement all of the above. My sump could use a good scrubbin' anyway.

ThanX!

I 2nd what Bent said. If you do a quick search you'll be hard pressed to find many that have fully cured themselves of this pos! Some say they have but for how long? I've only read a handful of people use the term "years" when talking about eradicating it. I'm going through the battle with it in my DT. I've only got a few options left before I'll need to pull the plug on all my live rock. I'm actually surprised that something has not hit the market for this stuff kent M aside.

Out of curiosity, what methods have you been trying to get rid of it?

1st: I tried pulling the small patch, BIG mistake. This was before I read up on bryopsis or even knew what I had. Stuff grew everywhere after.

2nd: Kalk paste with peroxide, nothing. Then I tried straight peroxide in a syringe with pumps off and slowly pushing the peroxide into the bry, nothing.

3rd: I got a nudi, would only mow it down like a lawnmower set on a high cut. Plus it was VERY slow.

4th: carbon dosing, only slowed it down. I also started getting pale sps's with little/no growth and some burnt tips.

5th: I got desperate and started removing the rock from the tank and dumping 3% peroxide right onto the rock. Let it sit out of water for a good 15min, rinse in a bucket of tank water before putting the rock back in the tank. This did kill the bryopsis and made it seem like I beat it. But this stuff roots so well and can grow back from the smallest fragment that after weeks of nothing it started growing again. I literally have taken out a good 75% of my rock from my 75 gallon tank and hit it up with peroxide at least 4x already. I thought that If I kept at it I would weaken it and win. I now have a bunch that has grown back after 1 week on vacation.

I am now trying the Kent M approach. I realize this is a hot and miss for some so that's 1 reason I held off on it. Also due to reading that some say that Kent might have either changed the formula or that due to more than 1 supplier not every bottle contains the stuff that helps kill bry. I'm on my 3ed day of increasing my mag by 100ppm a day. I'm shooting for 1800 and then hold steady for 2/3wks. After taht I will do a 20% water change and redose accordingly. I'm also setting up a ats but I've read mixed reviews on if they totally work on bry, probably more like just help. If this does not work I have to decide on what to do next?

Ugh, that is a nightmare. Sorry you're having to go through all of that, and I hope that I don't.

I have a question in regards to the Kent Tech M.....The directions state to add 1ml per gallon which will increase your Magnesium 18.3ppm per day. Why are you raising it 100ppm per day?

I've read/heard to do this also (90-100ppm), in regards to Bryopsis treatment, but then I have also read/heard that you never want to increase Magnesium more than 10ppm per day. Which is which?

Also, even for Bryopsis treatment, isn't 1800ppm a LOT!?!

ThanX for your input!

You really need to consider running an ATS (algae turf scrubber). The primary reason algae grows in the tank, is due to excess nutrients.

HERE is a long thread about these, and their success. The hair algae that grows will outcompete any other algae in your system.

I use them, as well as a chaeto reactor, to ensure I pull all excess nutrients from the system. I can now feed as much as I want to.

I got rid of a bad plague of it with Lettuce Nudi's. I had baby nudi's all over the tank, it was so bad and they had so much to eat. It took a while, but in the end it was was completely eliminated. Only hassle was retrieving them from the overflow.

Yes the norm for increasing your mag is what the bottle states. When trying to combat bry you want to increase the mag with kent by 100ppm a day. This is to try and basically overwhelm the bry with all the bad stuff that kills is found in kent mag. But like I said from what I've read either not all bottles contain it or they no longer do?

I actually just finished building one and probably will get it online by this weekend. as far as nutrients go, I had them so low that my hanna phos readier was reading .03 ppb & my no3 was around 5. This was not due to the algae consumption either. This was due to heavy skimming, water changes, and dosing along side of me hitting this stuff up with h2O2 out of the water.. For a while I also had gfo online. Sps's started going bail & bleaching on me.

Did you start out with more than 1? The one I had would only eat the fern/top portion. I also know that there's multi varieties of bry so some peoples experience differs from other. I believe I've got the worst one you can get. it's the green with a blueish hue to it.

It's good to be scared. I had an outbreak of bryopsis many years ago and eventually I had to break the whole tank down, cleanse it, dump all the LR and start again. Nothing would get rid of it. Immediate action is required.
