ok, so say i want to make my own sump....how do i go about doing this? what will i need?

Depends what you want to make it out of and how fancy you want to get. You could start on the low end with a 10g tank and some siliconed pieces of glass. Then on the high end you could build your own acrylic sump. You really need to gather some requirements (size, features, etc.) and constraints ($$) before anyone can help you much more.

I'd suggest doing some searches in the DIY forum to see what others have done and considered.
