What is the perpuse of a sump. i have a 29g tank with 50lbs of live rock is it better to get one im making my tank a reef thanks

there a several advantages.

1) a clean look. throw all your equipment in there. heater, skimmer, etc.
2) increased water volume
3) when adding supplements, top off water, water changes, etc. it gives it a chance to dilute before entering your tank.
4) clip a light on, and have your algae grow in there.

there are a lot of perks but, if you're going set up a tank, do it right from the start and take your time. this is a long term hobby, meaning, it takes a long time for a tank to get established, so spend the extra few bucks and day of time to do things right. that's just my two cents.

I still don't get what a sump is....where would it go? In the cabinet below my biocube? Any pics of an easy sump for a beginner?

it would go below in the cabinet

for my 29 gal i made it out of a clear trash can from target...my tank is a 29 tall and the stand was to small to fit a ready made sump...so i made one that fit

oh by the way i had to make one cause i already had the tank drilled and over flow was installed

A sump is usually just a low point where fluids collect. In the context of reef aquariums it is a place to hide equipment, put undesirable creatures, etc etc. A sump can really be located anywhere you want to plumb it, most end up under the tank in a stand or if the tank is in a special room, like an in-wall tank would be. The sump is wherever is convenient for the owner, every one has their own preference.

Like it was mentioned above, sumps are convenient places to add top off water, supplements, more water volume, etc etc.

sumps are pretty sweet it makes your tank look alot better.

an easy DIY sump is to just go out and but a 10 gallon for like 9.95 or whatever they are go to your hardware store or home depot and get 5- 10X10 pices of glass or acrylic for your baffles to slow water flow down and get a tube of non-toxic silicone the aquarium kind if you can find it this is what you want it to look like...

somthing along the lines of that. the green tube is going to be your return line, the blue one is going to be your overflow head, and i dont know why the red one is there to be honest. but its pretty simple. hope this helps you understand it more. good luck!

ya if you are going to have a sump with your tank, i would say get a big plastic containter, like a storage bin. works the same as the glass sumps and you will save a lot of money.

also if you want your pump to be more quiet, you can get aquaruim instalation at a LFS. wrap it around the pump.
works great.
