are sumps necessary? i am starting my first aquarium and im wondering if you really need one, which things do you absolutely need? filter, heater, skimmer, pump, ect let me know. i am planning on having a tank around 75-100 gal with fish and some coral eventually along with starfish and some other things so just the basic needs would be nice as im starting up buying

Sumps are not necessary, just a nice added volume and place to put all of the equipment.

Necessities list:
1. Tank
2. Patience and reading
3. RO/DI Water
4. Patience and reading
5. Good salt mix
6. Patience and reading
7. Live rock
8. Patience and reading
9. Heater
10. Patience and reading
Etc.

Noticing a pattern? no one can give you a list pf everything that you need because every system is different.

At 75 to 100 gallons I'd recommend having a sump to hide equipment, as a place for topoff/additives, and a place for more live rock. But I'm not a fan of the "box of rocks" reef tanks.
