Sumps

I know sumps help provide better filtration and help clean your water in the tank. Im starting a cichlid tank and beinmg freshwater do i really need a sump or would a canister filter or even doing a wet/dry sump have any good intentions for the tank?

you can make it as complicated as you want, what kind of cichlids? if they are large destrutive ones that smash glass heaters and tear siphon tubes out of the tank then I would run a rr tank with sump. If they are angel fish than a sponge filter and heater is pleanty. I would log into one of the cichlid forums and see what people are running might be more informative than a reef forum.....

I ran Malawian tanks for many years, went with a reverse under gravel system and an over sized canister filter.

An oversized canister filter should be more than sufficient, as long as it's a quality canister filter. I like eheim personally. Easy to maintain, and does the job really well. Just make sure to buy one rated for a larger tank than what you're going to use. I've also found that adding a powerhead or two in a freshwater tank really helps out.

I was planning on doing lake malawi and peacocks with fine subsrtate and larger rocsk for them to hid in so hopfully not to much digging around but yeah ive been looking into the canisters
