I did a test setup in a 38 gallon tank using the sun THE only light source, things I found
1) You will probably get different colorations than under bluer artificial lights, colors that fluoresce might still look neat, however those that don't might look a tad bland.
2) Do not underestimate how powerful the sun is, it has the potential to raise the temperature of the water quite significantly! In my tank it raised the tank temp to 90F! Luckily all the softies I had just got really stressed (what clued me into something being out of whack), and they did survive, other corals may or may not be as forgiving. Lots of corals do get exposed to shallow tide pools that do heat up considerably but when everything is don't expect good results
3) Don't have fish in there, or anything else that could potentially put nutrients in the tank, algae will love the sunlight!
