Naturally, the sun coral will not open up during the daytime and will open at night to feed.

Anyone have experience in getting the cirals to open up during the day? Such a beautiful coral that i cannot enjoy during the light-cycle hours.

Hoping to get the whole colony to open up instead of bits and parts of it ... TIA

Yup once they get used to getting fed when the light is on. then everytime there is food particles in the water they would open. At least that's the deal with my sun corals.

put it under some shade, they dont like light a lot, so some shade will work wonders, i read that sun corals live in dark caves, good luck

Sun corals can be trained to open and feed during daylight hours. The difficulty you will face is giving your sun corals enough time to notice that there is food during lighted hours. Easiest method to do is to cut a plastic soda bottle in half. Cover the entire coral colony with half of the bottle and then feed through the bottle opening. The food remains within the coral area and not blown away by the tank's water flow. Follow this procedure until you start seeing the coral open when the lights turn on.

loc01 .. thanks. I was hoping to do it w/o having to feed it. Seems I will have to use food as an enticement tool :)

bustayanky ... I try to get thaw the frozen food out w/ tank water and then use some of the same water (w/o food in it) to 'signal' to the corals that it's feeding time - once the corals open, I then usually feed the tank and target those corals that require target feeding :)

sanababit ... we must have been reading the same stuff ... I read that on many different sites I was reseraching prior to my purchase ..

sarwa ... that's a great idea. I am going to have to try that out .. hopefully that will coax him to come out during light hours :)

Thanks guys for all the help. I knew I would get useful answers here! Always do :) :) :)

The trick with sun corals, you need to place them where the current will bring food to them when you feed your fish, thatway they will pick up the signal faster.

bustayanky .. No worries.

I can get my corals to open up during feeding no prob .. just have a problem when I am not feeding it :)

mine are only about half open when not feeding.... I am sure if i could feed a little more random they would stay open better. I believe the key is to making them always look for food.

Bustay- where did you get your dendros?

kawicivic ... I never thought about that either. Maybe I should feed the tank a few times a day RANDONLY every day ... that might actually work. At this point in time, the ONLY time my colony opens is when i feed ....
