Sun Coral Pics

wow, very insightful. Thanks Dendro. Now Liveaquaria doesn't have them. Where to get one? where to get one? What does everyone say? where did you get your sun coral?

mine is about 6-8 months old. I do not directly feed. I feed the tank cyclopse-eeze and mysis every few days.

dendro982, good info!

For those wanting sun corals, here are some simple tips:

1. Needs to be fed. Direct feeding is more preferable because you know if the coral is actually getting the food or not.

2. Water quality must be fairly good. Dendro982 mentioned that they can tolerate up to 80 ppm of nitrates. Nitrate can get that high if you feed more often and don't have an efficient way of removing the nutrients, extra food, etc.

3. Light does not matter to them. THey are non photosynthetic and also they tend to open up at night. They can be trained to be opened during the day. If you truly want a coral that looks like a sun coral that opens 24 hrs a day, then get a dendrophyllia coral.

Two types of sun coral here, orange and black. I've had them since February:

They're alternatingly target fed cyclopeeze and mysis shrimp about every three days. On one occasion at night I had the sun corals closer to the glass and was observing it with a flash light. The light attracted many tiny mysid shrimp and many were captured by the sun coral when they inadvertently brushed against the polyps. I'm not sure how many of these the sun coral captures randomly on a nightly basis.

You can post on the wanted to buy section of Reefcentral and I am sure people have ones they are selling or fragging. Many of the sponsors here on Reefcentral sell sun coral colonies.

Does anyone online carry them though? or is anyone on here selling one?
You can check the local stores - here it's almost always available, middle prices (CND$44-49) for the big colonies, sometimes orange and yellow colonies on the same stone, or orange and black, for the same price. In the middle of the week could be cheaper - mine was $36. Only try to buy the healthy looking one, should be easier.

everyone told me to put mine low in a cave. It is in the middle of the tank. Is not covered by anything and opens in the early evening. I do feed mine every day frozen shrimp. Each polyp is an individual animal. I was told to feed it every three days, but I love to watch it eat then reopen. It is fuller at night. Got mine at aquacon.com

glitzy one - be careful about purchasing from aquacon as there have been many complaints about them. Go check the vendor feedback forum, so there is a tip.

Also there has been talk about each head being individual and needing to feed every single head. Thats nearly impossible because some heads are not accessible and after talking to several experienced keepers of sun corals/dendros, each head can eat by itself but the coral as a whole works together and shares nutrients. If the heads are connected by tissue, they can share nutrients. So if you have a 10 head sun coral colony, if only 4 were able to eat, those 4 will share the nutrients with the other 6 that didn't get it. From experience I've had a unknown sun coral species that the mother head had 4 babies. The babies were too small to eat mysis or brine so I just fed the mother head. Well those babies got big and probably from the nutrients shared from the mother.
