sun coral

I got one about a week ago and have been spot feeding it a little every day. It just started extending its tentacles last night. Will it extend its tentacles only when it is hungry? I know they only tend to extend every night, I just didn't know if it was every night whether it was hungry or not.

You will have to target feed them. LPS sweeper tentacles, like those of a favia, extend to catch food in the water col. Mine do it at both day and night. Imo when it happens is the best time to feed them.

Sun corals are always hungry. Feed it every night if you can for the best growth and highest chance of it producing planula (if you want it to). Feed it a big meal once or twice a week at the very minimum. They will come out at night on their own, but will come out during the day if they're trained to do so. If you see tentacles peeking out while the lights are on, reward it with some food and it will start to come out during the day more. Also if you feed some type of smelly food (mysis juice or coral frenzy for example) at the same time everyday, it will start to open up in anticipation of that feeding on a daily basis. Then from there it should open up more during the day. Hope that helped.

Thanks, I spot feed it every time I feed the rest of the critters, and every time I see it open. It really likes mysis and cyclo peze

I do cover mine with the top part of a plastic bottle, but its the darn shrimp that comes over and steals whatever is left there when the plastic cover comes off
