Sun Coral

Thats really weird. They almost look like new polyps but i dont think so. Never seen that before???
I assume the orange speckles are attached and dont blow away, right?

None else?
I'll give you a bump and hope maybe someone with more experience than me with sun's can identify this. I'm very interested to hear any other thoughts

Make sure it gets good flow, and your CA and ALK are on target. Mine seems to be sensitive to changes in water chemistry. I also take mine out of the tank to feed it at night. I use a plastic bowl with just enough water to cover the polyps. Then I add completly thawed, chopped shrimp or cyclopeze to the water with a turkey baster. Try to put the bowl underwater when taking the coral out so it is not exposed to air, that usually makes the polyps retract. Keep us updated and good luck.

That is VERY strange. I would guess it would be some kind of disease, but I have no idea what... The orange speckles (baby polyps?) are a mystery to me also...

Or, maybe, scince you didn't acclimate it for very long it is spewing food it had previously eaten. I dunno, just a guess.

Well, the fact that they are not opening is to be expected. Mine didn't open for 2 weeks. It took feeding every night for that amount of time to get it to open. Is it eating anything? Have you tried feeding it? Is the gray still covering it?

Noone else has any ideas?
2 weeks seems too long to wait for feeding. IMO this is the reason so many fail as they take to long to eat. Have you tried the cup yet? If you squirt a little frozen cyclo soaked in some selcon or zoecon 1-2 times a day, it should open in at most 3-5 days, usually 3 or less ime.
Has it fed at all yet? What have you tried?

Sorry if my post sounded confusing. I fed my sun coral on the second day after putting it in my tank. I then fed it every night for 2 weeks until it finally opened. You should probably be trying to feed it. I would say try to feed it at least every other day, but preferably every day. It most likely will not open without feeding it. Is it still covered in gray slime?

ezcompany, howz about an update on your Sun coral. Im not an expert but a begginer as yourself with sun coral. I used the same feeding method as fishgirlheather and it worked perfect. Hope you tried it that way.

The orange speckles are the insides of the coral. If you look closely they look like tangles of worm-like threads. I see these when "someone" has nipped my sun coral, damaging it. I was going to look into/ask what these were exactly, but I can tell you that they withdraw inside once the break has sealed, so assumed that it was part of the corals defence/healing mechinism. I've seen similar, but white, coming from brain corals that have been nipped. HTH

excompany I'd take the poor thing out and sniff to make sure it hasn't died. However, it may be trying to recover. If it doesn't feed soon, and they need regular feeding from all acounts, it may not make it.

My sun coral (acclimatised slowly) was feeding happily within about 4 hours of being placed in the tank and opens every night.

If you are not yet testing for Calcium I would suspect that your water parameters may be off. How long has the tank been up? Most corals are pretty sensitive to ph, calcium and alkalinity. If you don't have some quality test kits, I use Salifert, and you are not testing regularly, I would suspect your water parameters are out of whack.
