Sun Powered Reef

I have a feeling because the water temperature going to the refugium is the same as the reef, the air in the refugium would be balmy as long as the lid is relatively tight. Like some Terrariums sweat internally due to outside temperature differentials.

Vitor,

With the cold weather, I imagine the fuge temp -- the air at least will be quite low (just above zero?) -- is it affecting the mangroves at all?

The roots will be safe of course, but I would watch the plants leaves don't drop off into the water.

Now I know sweet 'hmm hmm' about mangroves, but I imagine they would not be used to such temps coming from the tropics?

Monsieur Google says:
http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/tiempo/issue10/mangrove.htm

Quote: "Frost caused by low temperature damages the mangroves in the north of Vietnam, especially on days with a low tide. On January 17th and 18th in 1961, for example, it was recorded in Quang Ninh that a number of mangrove leaves became dry and died when the temperature fell to below 2Ã"šÃ‚°C."

If the leaves fall off, I would remove them quick sharp from the fuge.

My cooker in the garden shed is keeping the temp @ 26C -- but I check it every day -- Hmm, I wonder if its even necessary to maintain reef temps just for LR cooking? hmmm.
I shall ask Monsieur google...

regards
Conor.

Hi conorwynne!

My refuge is just like a green house, if you see in the pics you'll see the lid, and like in every green housethe air exchange is very importante, there for i have an air pump to allow gases exchanges.

At night i cover the tank and the refuge with roofmate, this way the temp losses are reduce to minimum, and the air temp is the same of the water.

I still have some condensation in the refuge, matter afect this situation is helping the mangroves new lifes not to get salt burn on the hedges.

As ususaly, that's all correct.

Have you ever considered a coral cat shark or marble cat shark in it? The tank is pretty amazing

Hi FishyMel!

Sharks are not my thing, i think they should be left alone in they're natural habitat. Sharks are the "referees" of the game we call sea life balance.

I would love to see how the pair of corals you got from the other guy are doing. The ones that you were testing the growth rates between out doors and in the coral nursery...

Have they grown more in your tank than his? or vise versa???

Hi!

At this time is not possible to take pictures of my tank, this have to do with the fact that i have lowered the water level, this way the water don't touch the top glass and i can easily maintain the temperature day and especially at night.
.

As the weather gets warmer and warmer, i'll put some new pics.

IIRC, his friend made it as they use NSW.
My mate and I go out on his boat on weekends to collect NSW.

We use a powerhead with a hose -- luckily he has electricity on board, but you can always use a car ciggie lighter with a converter.

Prior to that we used to struggle, and I mean **struggle** to get the container back out of the water. Mind you, we are usually drinking wine / beer at the time while fishing for Atlantic Makerel.

I fish for fun, but its not real fishing -- its too easy. Throw in line, ten seconds later pull in 5 fish! We cant give them away fast enough!

I prefer the "standing in the river" fly fishing, and catching nothing in ten hours... not everyone "gets it", but it is very peaceful and beautiful.

Anyway... its a home made pump AFAIR.

Conor.

Would it be possible to get you to post some more close-up comparison pictures of your coral's growth?

Thanks! Your system is every "green" reefer's dream.

I'd like to see it covered in snow. Just so we can have a December picture. :)

Do you brush or scrape the glass clean so the livestock can still get light? How often do you feed under these circumstances?

How many days this time of year are pure cloud cover, so that it remains pretty dark all day long? Or is there enough sun to melt away anything on the glass?

Hi Melev!

The Ice formation only occurs during the night from 02h00 to 08h00, only at this time the temperature drops to 0ºC, and it's not every day, probably 2 or 3 weeks a year, not more.

As I told before, at this time of the year, I have to cover the top glass with isolating material so that the temperature maintains constant with no extra costs associated, there for I don't have any ice formation, for this to happen the cover temperature should not be above 0ºC, and has you know I have 25ºC inside the tank, some heat escapes there for I will never have ice in the top of the tank... I wish it happen; it was a sign that the tank was so isolated from the environment that no heat was lost.

So you cover it each night, and still get plenty of sunlight each day? I was wondering how the day to day maintenance is handled. I've never been to Portugal, and don't know what your weather is like.

Amazing setup!
I would have guessed it was always sunny and warm in Portugal with you having an outdoor tank like this.
I am amazed at everything you have done with it, great job!

Hi Melev.

I only cover the tank at night, just before i go to work i remove the cover.

At this time of the year the sun rises around 07h30 and sets around 18h00, i have almost 12 hours of light a day.

The maintenance is the same trough out the rest of the year, except for the rainy days.

I left you a pic and a video where it's video where it's rainig Hail:

Hi reefkoi!

Portugal have seasons but not so "aggressive" as in others parts of the world.

If you check out the world map, Portugal is between Morocco and England, there for the weather is temperate.

Thank you for that.

You're crazy to be running out there in the hail for us. Mission accomplished.

Good thing it wasn't golf ball size hail. Next you need to install a beer tap next to the swing ;)

G'day Vitor,

Would it be worth rigging up a cover that swings out of the road during the day, and can be easliy swung back over the tank at night, or if the hail were to be big. It could double up as shade for viewing your tank on a hot day.

Cheers

Chris
