Your thread is kickin butt on the TOTM poll!!!!

Small correction: ThoTM poll. :) (Th = Thread vs T = Tank)

Can you post some pics of how you placed some corals in the tank. It looks like you have good access but I am trying to figure out how you get to the far side of the tank. Great item btw!!

Hi Vitor

Long time no See!

Congrats for the tank, it´s awsome. I should also congrat your courage to inovate.

About the picture of your pink Acropora, Kill that brown Crab, he is one of the kind the eat coral polyps! :)

Hope to hear from you soon.

Dear Friends.

First of all, i wish to apologize for the delay, i've been very occupied with some professional issues.

It' s a great honor for me to be one of the nominees for the "Thread of the Month", thank you so much.

baboon

The brown crab is with the acropora for about 2 years, until this day no harm was done, i'll see in the future.

liver

Soon i'll post some pics about the access, its been raining for the last days.

t5Nitro

The tank is about 250 Galons.

the color on them corals is awsome. Especially in such a short amount of time seeing that drastic change!

Please keep showing more pictures!!!

this is so cool, was curious on the dimensions of the tank though as well as what are you going to do when the coraline grows to the top of the glass

1 word....WOW!!! I voted!!!! I sure wish something like that was feasable here in the Pacific North West...I guess it would be for about 3 weeks out of the year...lol.

Hello Vitor,

Just stoped by to congratulate you. This is a very interesting project and I hope it will fully succeed as you expect.

To tell you the truth my only concern is about temperature. As you know, in Summer, the sun is very strong in Portugal and that 250 gallons will eat, even, being buried underground.

Moreover, the glass on top will increase the green house efect on that aquarium, contributing to additional increases in temperature.

Please keep us up to date with the temperature curve throught the summer, as this project can be a great opportunity for all of us to learn a lot with it.

I'm voting on your thread also.

Best Regards

Victor-simply amazing

What type of glass did you use to make the top of the tank? I have read that normal glass blocks short wave length UV light and this somehow inhibits coral growth. But you look like you no problem with growth in your tank!

I really like the tank, it looks great any you have great growth. The only problem that occurs to me is that you don't get to see the cryptic critters, amphipods and the like.

Hi Guys.

I'll try to awnser each and every one.

Hi Opcn

That´s not entirely true, if you lay down in the glass you can see all the details like any ordenary tank.

Hi Luis

I build the tank underground for only one reason, temp estability.

As you know the earth as a stable temp and if the tank stays completely isolated, the temp losses or gain are minimal.

I start the construction of the tank in January with temp between -2ºC at night and 10ºC in a good day.

Has you know January is the coldest month in Portugal like in every part of the northern hemisfere, this way if a thin layer of air stays betewen the water and the top glass will cause a green house efect and the temp losses are minimal.

Your summer theory about the top glass causing a green house efect, that only hapen in the winter time previouse exemple, if the water is in direct contact with the glass the temp will much be the same, glass is a pour isolating material in direct contact regarding temperature, for exemple, a glass of hot water by the balcony will be could in a matter of minits. Another exemple is a house window, normaly they have a double glass with a thin air in the midlle.

In the summer time (July and August) i intend to use a cover cloth that blocks about 50% of the total sunlight, i have pics somewhere in this thread.

In the winter time when the sun is to low (December/January), i intend to use a mirror to reflect the low sunshine directly to the tank.

How? My house as 2 floors and is turned South, i intendo to install a mirror in the balcony, when that time comes i´ll put some pics.

Hi tptp279,

That is not a problem my magflot removes all coraline from the top glass, just like in any tank.

Thank you all

Cheers

I have to join the rest and say that your tank truly is beautiful.
It is also great to see/read that you have put a lot of thoughts into the design. And you seem to have thought about every question people have asked prior to them asking.

Very beautiful.
