Well because of work being so hectic working 70+ hours a week, I have not had much time to surf RC and keep up with the club. I bought a chiller a couple weeks ago and hooked it up. No problems everything is working like a dream.
UNTIL…….
Today was the day to do a water change, so as my routine goes I started siphoning out some water from the main tank, after shutting off the pumps in the sump. The sump has plenty of capacity to handle the amount of run off from the main tank. After a short time I looked down to see I was standing in an inch of water about 10 feet by 5 feet across. The water puddle was approaching the surrounding carpet in my Daughters room and the Great room. My wife grabbed a bunch of towels and started damning up the water. She quickly ran and got the carpet shampooer and started sucking up water; all the time I was trying to figure out why I had water cascading from the sump. It did not take long to figure out why I had water running all over the place; the chiller I hooked up the other weekend had one flaw in the plumbing. I used a spare part from on old magnum 300 canister filter. The old intake from the filter I decided to use as a return for the chiller. The end of the return was about 6 inches under water. I figure I had another 30 gallons to go before the water would have stopped on its own.
I sure am glad I moved the tank to a part of the house where it is sitting on the tiled floor. There are fans going now to dry up any water left under the stand and whatever has absorbed into the wood of the stand.
I am very happy that my wife understands things like this can happen. It stills makes me mad that I did not even consider the siphon break issue.
Hope to see everyone at the meeting, as long as work slows down.
