Sundial Snails

Adam,

Did any of your make it? Are they making a dent? Mine just helps the damn things spread. I am looking at adding more if I can find them. Is there any evidence that they will eat anything else? I would hate for them to cuase a problem if they do ever eradicate the polyps.

Mine are surviving. I saw three of the four I added and they had grown quite a bit. I keep looking for egg masses as well. I would be ecstatic to find out that they can reproduce in captivity.

I think I would need quite a few more for them to be able to eat the zoanthids faster than they are growing, but I can see some spots that they have picked clean.

I believe that they are obligate on zoanthus (the genus, not all things we call zoanthids). I am pretty sure they won't even eat Palythoa or Protopalythoa but I could be wrong.

If they ever do get to the point where they may turn to other prey or starve, I would simply suggest passing them on to the next zoanthid victim.

Maybe we can find a way to secure a few dozen of these through one of Steve suppliers (or Jason etc?)

I am on the verge of having to replace 1/2 of my base rock otherwise.

Are you guys having a problem with zo's and them taking over the tank ?

I have brown with pink centers that are taking over all of my base rock.. yes. I want them gone... but it looks like I may just have to start over to do so.

You might find somebody in your area to trade you corals with zo's that you have but it sounds to me the same as xenia years ago when people used to look for them at one point and then it ended that some try to get ride of it and can't Good luck getting them out of the tank and I will be interested to know if the snails did the job for you.

Thats the problem... I cant "get them out" they are covering my BASE rock. The only way is to dismantle the entire tank really. The single sundial snail is actually helping them spread. I need a few dozen at least. Predation to extinction is possible I think... but it will take an army.
