Sunny d help

I searched the inter web and think I found a reason. I bought a frag of sunny d's a couple weeks ago. They were doing good until last week. First they wouldn't open all the way, then closed tight. This whole time I can see new growth. The mat spread then developed bumps. The bumps formed openings.

Is it normal to see growth while the big polyps are clamped shut? I read that Zoas and palys can stay closed for weeks then open looking great. What do u reefers think?

Place them in a slightly shaded spot and wait for them to open.

There's nothing wrong with that... its using energy to bud new polyps as you can see on the base of those adult polyps new babies are sprouting. you can try to move it slightly under a little bit more light and more indirect flow. But don't have it being blasted by too much light if its newly introduced in the tank.

Thank you for your help everyone. I tried low light in my rehab tank for 2 days with no change. I will try more light now. It is pretty crazy to see 4 new polyps growing on a 4 polyp frag. I won't worry til they are gone. Pics will be posted when they open.

BTW - what are your tank parameters and tank specs?( lighting / flow etc ? )

+1 on tank specs move them to lighter flow and shaded spot

sometimes lighting difference from one tank to another can shock the zoas. maybe it is closed because it needs to adjust to your lighting at a slower pace. different zoas/palys are different from each other according to their sensitivity levels. this could be one possibility.

probably try the shaded area as the others suggested.

The rest is a mystery. I do a 12.5% water change every saturday. I dont dose. Acans, rics, euphyllia, blastos, acro, duncan are all happy.
Today the polyps are showing a little color then closing.
The white specs on the polyps are not pox

Your salinty is a little low. When my salinity was real low my zoas didn't wanna open, I even lost some. When you run a low salinity you have lower traces of amino acids...

The light situation is tried and true for me, I always have to put my zoas it he shade.

If they are starting to open that is a good sign

try bumping it a bit to 1.025, Z's and P's are VERY affected by Alk/ph/Sal/lighting/temp just my .02

also inspect where your MG is at.

Ok. I will bump to 1.025 over the next couple days and get my water tested. I've never had my water tested

anytime you have issues with coral or corals showing stress, always check your parameters. Invest on ph/alk/mg/ and other testers. Proper stable parameters as key to keeping corals happy and propagating.

Update

The frag has been in high flow high light for a week or more. I did a 2 gallon water change in my estimated 6.8 gallon system. After the water change my water parameters were..
Ca-380 (api)
Alk-8 (api)
sg-1.025
Temp- 78
Mg-1150 (elos)
PO4-0 (api)
NO3-0 (api)
I raised the Ca to 400, alk to 10 added a skimmer and ball of chaeto in my fuge. The fuge makes up 50% of the system. The baby Sunny d's are mostly open, the big ones lost a lot of there color. I still have to pick up a Mg supplement to raise it closer to 1300

That's good news. Ur parameters were the culprits. From the pics they are recovering n they're color will come back in no time as long as parameters stay good
