Sunset monti on sandbed

Just wanted to know that if I placed a frag of sunset monti on the sandbed would it not grow out or will it continue to grow in a plate form.

It can however you might end up with sand on it killing portions of growth.

How about on a frag rack with no plug on it. Will it encrust on the rack or grow out?

It depends on the monti. If it is left alone for long enough and it is an encrusting monti, it will grow on the rack. You can see two types of montis growing in this picture but there were on plugs and over grew their plugs.

A sunset monti will not plate. It will encrust or grow thicker but will never plate.
