Sunset Wrasse has nasty gash....Opinions please

As the title says, my 6 inch Sunset had a nasty gash when I got home. Like many Wrasses, he kind of lodges himself into a rock and sleeps pretty deeply, could he have been stuck.....The only other possibility is the Sohal Tang slashing him, but I don't think so, the Sohal has shown very little aggression at all toward him or anyone for that matter.....He does have a slight gash on the other side too which makes me think he was stuck somewhere.... He is eating ok, and seems ok, I hope he makes it. Pics for your judgement.

Looks more like a bite to me, than a slash.

What kind of triggers is he in with?

Hmmmm, Sargassum is 4 inch, Niger is 3 inch....The Sargassum doesn't typically sleep in the rocks, he sleeps by a powerhead, the Niger is a bit small...Neither would dare mess with the larger, faster Wrasse while he was awake.

It is possible, however

the Wrasse is the largest fish in the tank, the angels don't dare mess with him yet either, the only fish above him in the "hierarchy" is the Sohal, it doesn't look like a tail slash (at least I don't think?) and tangs are not typically biters. Could have been bitten while sleeping, but he does have a less deep gash on the other side.

IDK:(

I would guess sohal tang. Hope that little passer isn't getting too aggressive!

HAHA....Not so much, 2 Inch Passer vs. 6 inch Sunset Wrasse would not go well for the Passer....I know there are not a ton of Thalassoma Wrasse owners on here, but there are not too many fish capable of bullying these guys.

Does everybody think I'm nuts that I was thinking he got stuck in a rock.

Cut looks kind of deep to be self inflicted against rocks, but it could happen. Would observe daily to ensure it's healing ok and wound does not get infected.

If you find another injury on him like that (or another fish in tank), it's probably caused by a tankmate.

When I saw the title I said OH NO thats a costly injury. A Sunset Wrasse is usually this fish....

Not that everything should be done to save the live of a fish, but the fish above is easily 2,000.00+$. Anyway, Thal. wrasses are extremely resilient and with good water conditions and good nutrition the fish should have no problem recovering from that injury. T

Yeah, the Wrasse with many names....I like Sunset best.

Oh, and google Sunset Wrasse and see what comes up, sorry but yours didn't even make the first page.

I would also think it is the sohol tang. Not a slash but a bite.As long as it is eating it should be ok.just watch for an infection and feed some vitamins with you food to boost his immune system.I had a bluethroat trigger that had a way worse bit on his side and he healed up in a couple monthes with good water quality and vitamins.

I don't think you are crazy for thinking it could be a gash from being stuck in the rock. Its strange that there is a similar wound on its other side. If they are fish bites, then the wrasse was subject to a repeated assault, not just a and isolated territorial or aggressive bite.

It very well could be bites, as your fish could get aggressive at any moment, I've heard, so I agree that you should keep an eye on the tankmates. However, if the damage on each side seems parrallel, it could be bad scrapes.

Either way, the remedy is the same--watch for infection, hope he heals up.

A snowflake eel took a bite out of my snake eel's dorsal fin, and it filled in nicely--can't even tell it happened (except that the snowflake went straight to the LFS)

Hope he is ok!

PS, I am jealous of your passer--I want one, but tank is too small and passer too aggressive--some day...

If there is a similar wound on the other side, it is probable that he dove into a hole in the rocks which he did not quite fit. Our Lunare has done this and I had to dig him out.

Kirk,

My Angels have had gashes like that on many occasions. I am not sure if it is from fighting with one another or from my triggers. They get better on their own within a week to 10 days. Just keep your water quality high and the affected fish well fed (which I know you do).

Thanks for the input everyone....Won't ever know exactly what happened I suppose, hopefully he will recover, he seemed ok and certainly was his piggy self at feeding time. I will update at some point.

Ha, I was just kidding about the passer! But I have a thalassoma genus wrasse and its bullet proof. It can live through anything! I got bit by my 32" BDM eel and the wrasse still eats like a pig! Yours will heal no problem!

I wouldn't sweat the gash either. It could've been from rocks. Either way, just watch for more new ones....rock scratches aren't an every day wound.

Just an update...It's been under a week since the injury and the Wrasse has made an impressive recovery, you can still tell, but he is looking good. I don't know if the original pics did it justice, but it was a fairly deep gash....Here is a new pic.
