Super close up macro shots

man, i was trying my extension tubes out yesterday, but i just couldn't get anything to focus.
I was using my 17-85mm, manually focusing as i have photodix, i was keeping it at 85mm. fstop at like 20

it just wouldn't work with all three. i got one shot of my clown goby with the first ring, 17mm i think?

working with a 50d. do i need a macro to make it work, or should i try pulling out my 70-300mm?

How far away from your lens was your subject? Will all 3 extension tubes, the point of focus is moved very very close to the lens. Adding any extension tube removes the ability to focus on infinity, only objects close to the camera. Depending on the lens, you may not be able to focus on anything more than a few inches away from the end of the lens with all 3.

very close, like three inches when i finally got one.
my 17-85 has a mf of a foot or foot and a half

i tried to get the watchman and he was blurry at maybe six inches away

ah i figured, stuff was too far away and dof was too tiny
just need to try a different lense
