Super Simple Mixed SPS Reef

Just found this video. Amazing reef...so simple. Check it out.

My one question is, does a tank take time to mature into this simple system or can it be this simple from the start?

Simple or complicated reef tank need time to build the bacteria source and microorganisms that your reef tank need. U can do everything manually and maintain a simple reef tank if you dedicated enough to do the task. 95% tank crash due to laziness neglecting wc or dosing or testing or feeding

I really do think there is a lot of randomness involved. Honestly. Some tanks just "stick" and others flounder. There are basics that we all know about but beyond that, there is something going on on a biological/chemical level with both the ugliest tanks and the best tanks that I'm not sure we're entirely in control of.

Back in the 80’s before Neptune and the only controller was the octopus at about a million bucks, that’s what we were doing. My first reef was 60 gal had an air stone skimmer, a W/D filter and 2X 175W halides + HO (not VHO) 03 actenics. But even then we knew that a tank had to mature before it was stable.

EDIT: just remembered, I used to use nylons for GFO and GAC back in the day too, just like she does LOL

What do you think about the concept of "randomness within limits" to create hardier and more resilient corals? Always thought perfect stability was paramount. She allows fluctuations in dosing, ATO, pH. Water changes q2 months. Are we doing too much overall?

She proves we don't need all the new gadgets, dosers, flow regulators, lights etc, to succeed. Need to look at my system where I can simplify things.

Just watched that video as well today. Keep in mind, this is her 5th or 6th tank and currently in this video is a 7 ft wide tank. All the other previous tanks she's had, has been an upgrade to go bigger and all tank transfers. So with that said, her rock and water has been somehwat established. She also mentions from her previous 6ft tank it was up and running for about 3 yrs but doesnt mention how long her other previous 3ft, 4ft, 5ft tanks was up for.

And in todays reefing world, its evolved to automation where the hobbyist tend to shoot for doing less physically to enjoy more time watching a home reef grow. To each his / her own, me Im in the middle with the little old and new school. Whats crazy, it that she knows every coral history and where or who she got it from.
