Surface skimmer for HOB Sump, Up and Downsides?

Does it make a difference from where in the water column you draw water into the sump?

I have a CPR large (5gal) HOB Aqua Fuge on my 29gal tank. These come with a pump that sits about 6 inches from the surface and pumps water INTO the fuge while using an overflow to return the water.

Having grown tired of looking at the surface skim, and my flow pumps unable to do much other than just push it around, I cleaned and cut veggie oil bottle and slid it over the pump (cutting notches at the top) to skim the surface into the sump which is packed with cheato and a nano skimmer.

It rid the tank of surface skim in a day, plus this enabled me to direct my flow pumps to create more flow to the lower part of the tank to help with the cyano, since I presume the tank is more effective at air exchange.

While I am patting my back on this inexpensive and super easy DIY solution, am I missing a downside to skimming the surface? Will this mean more detritus build up on the sand bed since it's now pulling water from the the surface and not 6 inches below the surface?
