surface skimming with a hob filter?

i got a 8gal nano setup from a friend along with an aquaclear110... i have it setup and running-using the aquaclear as a fuge basically- with a dsb and chaeto.. but my question is has anyone been able to use this setup and get it to surface skim? i have some ideas but wondering whats out there..

hmmmm.. interesting... i was thinking of making an internal overflow box.. like the weir type and having the aquaclear intake take water from that...

looks good- but some have had problems with it creating bubbles in the tank :/
