Surg device with megaflows? Does it work?

I run one with a non drilled u tube external utube overflow. Can't see why a megaflow would be any worse off. Works just fine. Just make sure you have your return pump going strong enough but not too strong (have an hour to watch it working in case you need to pull the plug till you figure out what hi surge is and how long it takes till the tank is ready for the next "surge"

I run my overflow to my outside 10,000 gallon pond with 40,000 lbs of liverock cultivated from our private site off of Florida. From here the output goes to my state of the art surge device which processes more water than the Georgia Aquarium does in a month.

However, I feel this is not sufficient to deliver the proper environment my one damsel deserves.

Got a 180 w/ 2 megaflow boxes and 2 hefty surges. To get the surges as big as they are, I had to do all 4 holes as drains and cut down the inner wall of the box.

I've seen DJ's surges and they work great on his tank.

you can do it with a little mod to the over flow open up the holes where the water goes in and make sure your sump can hadle the overflow should the power go out

Do you have any pics of your surge system?

Here's the left side of the 180

Does the vent decrease the bubbles when your surge fires?

how high above your tank are your surges?

Where's your biowheel? I know you run one.

I'd like to check out your surges sometime to see how they compare to good surges. ;)

What do you mean by good surges I have seen DJ's and they seem to be good to me :) :) :)

What is the volume of your surges and do you get good waves?
I didn't think you could drill the bottom of a tank? Thought the bottoms were shatter proof glass?
Is there much noise from the surges?

How about a video! :fun2:

"decreases bubbles, helps control surge fill level, aids in increased flow to surge."
how high above your tank are your surges?
"the bottom of the surge tanks are 8-10" above the top of the main tank."
Where's your biowheel? I know you run one.
I keep them on my sump instead of having a fuge. Bio wheels rock! :lmao: ."

I'll be having a little get together(mostly the OT crew) after I get the 6 hundo. ;)

Thanks Joe!

Ed-I am using 2- 29gal tanks. 1 is a refuge/surge tank(left side). About 1/2 is for the surge. The other 29(right side) is split in 1/2 for 2 surges. The one goes to the right side of the 180. The other goes to the 75. If the outlet is just under water level, it will make some good waves. Mine are about 3-4" under the water. Still moves the surface, but gets more throughout the tank.

You can drill the bottom of the following tanks(referred to All Glass tech. info.): 2.5,5.5,10,15,15H,20L,20H,25,29,30,30B,33L, 40B,some 75's,90,120,125,150,180,210. My reef ready tanks had tags saying "tempered bottom, do not drill". I don't know how they drill them, but it said "don't". Always check for anything saying tempered bottom, just in case. These tanks were listed by All-Glass Aquariums as tanks with non-tempered bottoms. Perfecto and others can be different.

Surges can be noisy. I have quieted mine down quite a bit. A thicker glass tank with a full glass top will help alot. Proper plumbing and venting help to. IMO

No video. :( Unless my xti can do it??
