Surge Protection?

I have GFCI in place near my tank, but would like to incorprate surge protection also.

Most GFCI equipment does not seem to have surge protection built in.

How do most people protect against surges? I am reluctant to plug a GFCI outlet into a surge protector or vice versa, but it seems that is the only way?

I had a whole house surge system put in my electrical box. $300 to have it installed by a pro. Best way to go really.

Would prefer to avoid powerstrips plugged into powerstrips...

ah, gotcha. Shouldn't be an issue as long as you pay attention to total draw.

But if you didn't want to daisy chain you could instead replace the outlet in your apartment with a GFCI and plug the surge protector into that. GFCI outlet will run you I think $7 IIRC (levitron) and is quite easy to replace as long as you follow safety guidelines. Fifteen minutes all told, kill the breaker, pull the old outlet, install the new. (Do at your own risk of course)

What problems are you having that you think a surge protector will provide?
Most power strips have very little surge protection anyways and are little more than a "feel good" thing.

And yes you shouldn't plug a power strip into a power strip.. its a code violation.

There are devices out there with both gfci and surge protection too.
