ok so my new tank is going to have a massive natural filtration system im planning on (1) 40B dedicated to a DSB of about 8-10" just depends on what it ends up being really lol

anyways back to my question im trying to go as energy efficient as possible so while pondering today i said hey why not a surge tank so my real questions are

how far does the drop have to be to actually create a surge i dont want anything to strong just a nice current to keep the debris out of it

im assuming i am going to use a 5gal bucket cheap as i can make this to try it out

do you think the surge from the 5gal bucket would be enough to create a nice flow across the tanks length im assuming it would be about 3 gallons total surging out of it

any help or suggestions are appreciated

What size tank/dimensions ... 75G ?

Also, as a side note, many people dont realize, when setting up surge style tanks, that it is imperative to have extra water flow devices besides the surge device. Otherwise, during periods of refilling the surge reservoir there will little to no water motion.

Basically, when utilizing a surge device, it is properly used as a supplementary water movement feature rather than as a main source of movement/flow. Not to mention placing 100% of a critical reef aspect in a device with a high probability of failure ...

ive got plenty of flow for the main display im actually switching over to another 75 gallon custom tank 48x24x16h rimless it is going to be housing 3 tunze wideflows and the big daddy tunze wavebox

got all of that to go in my 135 cube but waiting to set it up as may be buying a house soon and dont wanna set something that bug up and have to move it

ok in the first pic is my 1st design i am going to be lifting water into the bucket with a maxijet 1200 (yes i know this will take awhile to fill) but you have to keep in mind this is for a low flow fuge area this want just have a dsb it will be filled with rock and macro that my current fuge is exploding with.

im going to try and go with 2" plumbing most of the videos ive seen online folks are using 1" and not falling from a great height and im not to impressed with the reaction of it.

as im limited by height im goign with the 2" in hopes of have a more powerful quicker release out of the bucket

the 2nd picture is another design which i will probably go with the create that much more disturbance i will try and time the pumps out so they release seperate from each other but pretty close in time so it will give a circular flow

KEEP IN MIND FOLKS THIS IS STRICTLY FOR A FUGE NOT A DISPLAY IVE GOT MORE THAN ENOUGH THERE

NOBODY has any insight on this? something i took into conisderation while thinking about it today what size bulk head would you think i need to put as the drain as im sure its going to take quite a large on to get 5 gallons move out fairly quick

i also am thinking that i need to accomodate that into my water level aswell to give it time to drain
