Svynx's biocube 29 thread

Mine has been a model citizen. He cleans like crazy. I'm sure I will have to target feed here and there, but for now, he's out grazing.

In the beginning mine were voracious eaters too, but in the last month or so they have gotten super lazy. Maybe because I feed them?

I haven't seen my 2 crabs in about a month now so I assume they are dead. If so my hermits and such would have cleaned them up anyway so not really a concern.

For your cleanup crew I would suggest going through reefcleaners.org Much better prices then TPP and you get them within 1-2 days with extras thrown in. I have been very happy with my orders from them and love getting the extras.

I'll check out reefcleaners.

5 minutes later....why haven't I heard of this website. Order placed. LOL.

I don't trust any crabs. FWIW I'm still feeling good with my 6 astrea snails and 7 hermits (6 new, one who survived in my dried LR for a month in a sealed dry bucket). These are all I have besides a skimmer in my 29g SPS cube. If you have bubble algae that's the only potential reason to have emerald crabs IMO. But I guess if you like them for them, then that's cool too. Most herbivores that weren't fishes were purely utilitarian for me.

If you're placing an order anyway, I would recommend some hang-on specimen containers (the ~$5/$7 ones) for transferring/dipping/acclimating fishes and coral. Better to transport fishes that way than with a net as well, you just chase the fish into the clear container, use your hand to keep the fish in while you dump the water, and move the fish to the next bucket/QT. Nets can hurt the fishes (I wouldn't buy any chemical products to "help slime coat before/after netting).

Good luck!

I have a clear colander from pampered chef I'm finding works great(my wife not so much lol). Being clear the fish don't even see it and they swim right in. I haven't used a net since I killed a crab trying to get him out of a tangled up net.

I completely understand. I ditched the net and picked up a specimen container. Total cost got bumped up by $1.

It's been over a month since I last posted. Honestly, there hasn't been anything to post. I've been messing with my light settings, trying to find that balance of visual effects and good light for the corals. I'm still playing with it. Things that have happened since last month:
- One ric has split. I'm waiting for it to fully heal and attach to gravel before gluing it where I want it.
- All corals have grown. New polyps are showing up. The two mushrooms are bigger. The pipe organ is spreading
- Purchased 4 fish about 2 weeks ago and placed them in quarantine. Two extreme misbar clowns, 1 bicolor dottyback, and a clown/citrin goby. All are healthy and eating. I should be able to transfer them to the tank on Monday (which will make the wife happy since she is tired of seeing the 5 gallon bucket on the kitchen counter).

Other than that, the tank has been on auto pilot, which is what I want the end result to be. Just the occasional cleaning, water change, and feeding.

Sounds good, thanks for keeping us updated!

Glad the fishes are almost ready to go in. It'll make the place quite more active and colorful!

Monday arrived early. Wife told me to get rid of the bucket. So...the fish are in the tank as of 15 minutes ago.

Question about photography. I have an Iphone 5 that I would use. Whenever I take a picture of the tank, it always is really red/blue/purple. I'm assuming this is normal. Do you guys turn the colored LED's off when taking pics?

Edit: Found a thread on here saying that an amber gel filter really helps. Should have one in about a week.
