Hey everyone...

Just tossing out the idea of a webpage for SWAM.. something simple to let peopole know we are here.... any thoughts and most importantly, anyone able to help us get one up and going?

Some basic steps for creating a web site

1. Define a url and check if it is available

2. Find a place to host your URL

3. Code your web pages and place on your web site.

I can help but do not want to maintain a website. It is not difficult
to maintain it, but as a computer science person I have a list to maintain already. If you can use microsoft word you can update a site.

IF you show me how to maintain it, I can do that... I just need to get started... and wondering bout everyones thought on it.... IMO it wil help us get exposure.... and can be put on cards to pass around..

Shall we use the web just for announcements and such, keep the RC forum going? I sustpect it will be easier for us???

I sort of like the Boston Reefers site. It would be cool to have a local site that is similiar if there is a lot of participation. It may not be worth it given the amount of traffice on this forum.

I would be willing to help out with the site if needed. I have plenty of experience designing websites. It probably wouldn't be much for you to maintain Denise, unless you wanted to change the content often.

There are several free hosting sites, or like ME2003 said check with your ISP and see if they provide some free space. I'm pretty sure Verizon does if you use them for your DSL. You'll have to pay around $30 a year to use your domain(www.swam.org). In my opinion GoDaddy is a scam. I went through their forms once and if you say yes to all the extra features to 'protect you' you end up paying $40 a month for hosting... Their 'free' offers are ad supported... Hey, they have a 'cute chick' on the main page though. They just need a baby and a couple puppies and everyone will want to use them for hosting... lol.

It would be neat to have a forum of our own and a site to archive club stuff. I can think of quite a few things that would be nice to have on the site. A link to paypal to renew our memberships would be neat. ;)

I totally agree. I'd love to have a SWAM web site. A link for Pay Pal would be great both to pay for renewal of membership and to swap frags among us. Let us know when and where. Sue

Coulda sworn I replied to this... Dave, lets set up a time here we can meet ... once it is up, I should be able to keep it updated... I have played a bit with Mozilla Editing.... not to great at it but right now we do not need anything fancy... i do not know for sure how to transfer the files to the web... LMK when you have some free time..215-6989
Thanks MaineRain, will keep you in mind if this gets too crazy..

Sounds good! I have Frontpage, Dreamweaver MX, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks, WSFTP and a slew of other program too...

I missed this somehow... I'll give you a call ASAP and we can set something up.

You should start a thread and have members suggest what features they'd like to see on the site. We can boil that down to what would be most beneficial to the club while still keeping it easy to maintain.

Idea:

Shoot an EMail off to "Marc" over at Reefcast (or his other sites). He is the president of a big one in Texas. He likes to help people out. Could probably give you a gazzion ideas on how to approach this. He could also probably announce the new organization for you too on one of his shows..

PS. Have you talked to Penny? Owner of AquaCorals in Fairfield? Did you know she used to be a web designer before she started her current business as a coral farmer and saltwater retail store?

She might be too busy, but then again, ..it might not hurt to ask, if anything, get some free advice from her... it certainly couldn't hurt her business any if we placed a few group orders on something or bought any equipment right? :)
