The Southwest Florida Marine Aquarium Society (SWFMAS) is pleased to announce our first annual Fall Frag Auction. This event will occur on October 11, 2008 in Fort Myers.

Exact location and start time are being finalized this week. I’ll post up later in the week. Auction start time will most likely be 1:00 p.m.

We anticipate having well over 300 corals/inverts for sale, plus a few more that will be raffled.

We have posted several links to our website.

Worked fairly well at our March open house. Also allows us more time to put together auction lists and powerpoint. That's what the pics are for....to show the parent colony while the frag is being auctioned. If we were only auctioning 20 or 30 items, no big deal, bring them the day of the event. I was expecting about 200 to 225 in March and we topped out just over 300. About 40 were last minute entries.

(Besides, hopefully it generates interest with other clubs around the state.......I probably wouldn't drive 3 or 4 hours for 20 or 30 frags......I would for 200 to 300!!)

we have been going through the same issues. we avaerage 100 per quater at ours. the split does sound like a good idea. how many different members bring the corals?

Originally our splits were lower, but we found that with better splits we get more participation. Which means more people. We probably will get roughly the same amount of money, but will have a "better" event. Keep in mind, this is only our second large event, so we don't have any prior experience to compare this too. Mostly, just our participation in other events or with past aquarium clubs in other cities/states.

Part of it is also to generate interest early. You will find that there are always a couple of people like me. When I did freshwater and was breeding, I would always hold back fish and plants when I knew we had a big event coming up. That way, I had lots to take to the event. My personal goal is 50 (which I exceeded for this event!!) A lot of what I have listed is not fragged, but it is ready. I just hold off for the event.

As far as number of participants, we had three stores donate frags/fish in March. I expect only one or two will for this event. For this event, we are pushing for club members more than stores. In March we had about 25 to 30 people bring frags and about 90 people total (not counting speakers, kids and vendors).

Does this mean you are all coming down???

Hope so, I've seen some of your frag lists from previous auctions. I don't have the room..........but you know the rule,

"There is always room for just one more!"

we may try to get some people together to carpool down there and check it out. i like to see the different varitey of corals you guys might have compared to what's up here. i'll post an anouncment on the orca forums to get a head count

well most would buy. juice (donovan) is always looking for corals. i would say atleast 10 would come if not more. i'll link the thread from the orca site to here with there replys.

I'm not a member, but wanted to post a couple comments after reading your club's website forum board.

1: We have three sources of income for the club. Our spring and fall events, plus membership dues.

2: The purpose of pics is to help sell the coral in question. Yes is brings more revenue when you have a big picture on a screen as opposed to a small frag in a bag. But, by preregistering and posting pics, we have found that it generates more interest. More interest means more buyers and sellers. Same with the good splits.

3: The splits get worse for the seller the closer you get to the auction. This was intentional in order to help with organization. You are right, when everyone preregisters and posts pics 3 days before the event it is a nightmare. We are hoping that this will create more of a steady registration as opposed to "all at once". This is the first time we have tried this, so we'll see. This spring we had one preregister split and then the day of the auction was 50/50. Worked, but there was some room for improvement.

FYI, I've posted twice about your frag auctions. If they were earlier in the day with better splits, I would bring 30 to 40 corals. Your last event would have cost me about $125 in gas and I would have been lucky to get home by 1 a.m. ( I drive a gas hog!) Time of event also factored in. We are hoping to attract members from ACROS, FMAS, ORCA and TBRC. With a late morning/early afternoon start and an early evening finish, this makes it a one day trip for people interested in coming from afar.

sounds good. we have a couple of members that bring there corals to just about every event. couple of them are like you and bring alot. sometimes into the 70's. that's why i dont harp on them to give me pics to post. if we lose there corals then it would be a huge hit on the income. i will bring this up to are board and see what they think. our event is in october so i got some time to do it and to check out your guys event. and your more than welcome to register to the site and post.

Tomorrow (September 10) is the last day to preregister corals and take advantage of the 80/20 split. The day after tomorrow, the split will change to 70/30.

As of now, we have just over 200 corals preregistered for this event.

As of right now, we have over 250 preregistered corals for the auction.

Sellers, beginning on Tuesday, the auction split changes to 60/40. So if you haven’t preregistered or posted pics, get busy and take advantage of the split.

We have had several people express interest in setting up tables at our frag auction. We have discussed this and would like to try a “split” venue. A vendor may set up a table at our event for a fee of $50 per table plus frag donations for the auction. There is no size restriction on the tables. For each 50 lot, we would like you to donate 1 coral for the auction. (0-50 corals = 1 donation, 51-100 corals = 2 donations, etc.). Donated corals must be considered rare or LE (in other words, no brown mushrooms, xenia, GSP, etc.). Donated frags must be fully healed (no fresh cut frags). The proceeds from the donated coral will be 100% to SWFMAS.

For our purposes, a vendor is considered anyone who sells retail (store or internet), anyone who has a FL Aquaculture certificate or a resale or wholesale certificate. A vendor could also be considered anyone that has a large set-up and is capable of producing large amounts of frags (like me!)

If you plan on setting up a table, please be there at 11:00 a.m. the day of the event and post a short list of some of the items you will be bringing at the following link:
