swimming pool paint?

slandis3

Mr lucky
Does anyone know if swimming pool paint will work for a diy wooden tank? I know i can get it at my local paint house but im not sure if its safe to use.

It may be "reef safe", but the nature of epoxies is they become hard and brittle ... and harder and more brittle with age.

Hard and brittle = cracks.

I'm in the planning stage of building 2 large in-wall plywood aquariums. I'll be using Sani-Tred as the primary waterproofing material, which is a single component polyurethane coating; www.sanitred.com

IM not sure about the cost of it though. The tank we are going to start building will be 120"x36"x34" Im sure it would take al least 2-3 gallons of that. AT $ 98 a gallon that would get expensive quick.

That may be the price per gal, but check out the rate of use and then compare that to the rate of use to the epoxy. Now that you have the cost per sq' in mind ... then compare their tech data. What is the elongation of the epoxy?

I’ll pay a tad more for performance over paying less for less lack of flexibility.

Well im still looking into this. I have heard of people building plywood tanks and useing epoxy and gotten 10+ years out of these tanks. A guy at my lfs just built one useing 2 part epoxy. I am going to do more research into this to see which one is better.

I have used that - sanitred before on stairs at a business, and it is amazing stuff. Super tough and has been walked on by thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people with no discernable wear. I agreed that it was questionable to spend 100 bucks a gallon on this stuff(you ought to see how much the paint for my motorcycles is a gallon)- but it got full great coverage. Even as thick as it is it covered I think six or seven - 7 foot by 15 inch stairs top bottom and sides.

I understand how expensive paint is ( 79 montie carlo painted chamallion) But this is a diy project. I am hoping to keep th cost down. Buy the time i buy two gallons of this and two gallons of a colored paint Thats going to add probley $300-$400 to the cost of the tank.

By the way, what size of tank are you thinking of building? That plays a big part of whether or not to DIY.

From what I've read, even a plywood tank could not be built cheaper than a prefab all glass tank ... when it comes to a specific size and smaller.

Even if it is on the small/expensive side ... you can make it the way you want, which may justify the added expense of DIYing it.

Its either going to be a 120"x36"x30" or a 96"x36"x30"
Ive gotten prices on both in glass and acrylic, $6000-$4000 for acrylic, $2700-$2400 for glass. Plywood will be $1500 -$750 depending on the paint i use. I tried applying some fiberglass to some plywood last night. I am suprised on how much stronger the joint was. I use standered woven matt and nasty smelling resin you get at any hd or lowes. I may use that and spend the extra money on aes paint. The price diference between west systems and the plan old nasty resin is about $150. The down side is my garage will smell bad for weeks. Glad its detached

Most new swimming pool paints are not your traditional epoxy as they do not harden like epoxies. Instead they cure to a rubberized form. The main problem with swimming pool paint is that it is chlorinized rubber, it leaches chlorine to prevent algae growth on the pool walls. It will put chlorine into your system. there is a good product for building plywood tanks called system three epoxy. it is a clear epoxy that can be tinted to whatever color you desire and it can actually be applied to damp wood (not that I would recomend it) here is a link to a page where a guy is building a plywood aquarium using this product http://www.woodcraftmagazine.com/Art...age=0&friend=1

hope this helps:rollface:

go to the aquarium pros forum under the diy section the thread title is
Interesting Woodcraft article
it has a direct link that works

I went to the website for the system three and they list that it is used in commercial plywood lobster tanks

I have one question is that 6,000-4,000 or 60.00-40.00 I sure hope the latter is correct if not why worry about the price of the epoxy

Yes 6000 - 4000 if i buy a pre built tank,Mind you the guy is probly the best acrylic tank builder out there. I can order the glass pains from inner america and have them shipped for about $2700. then assyemble it my self. If i build the tank out of plywood a 10' tank will cost about $750 and an 8' tank will cost about %750.
